Glam-A-Gedon 25

Glam-A-Gedon. The name pretty much says it all. Poison, Motley Crue and the New York Dolls will tour together and they've named the tour...Glam-A-Gedon.
Maybe the single worst name for a tour in the history of, well, tours. But I digress.
Bret Michaels broke the news of the tour during a taping of the CNN show Piers Morgan Tonight. Bret taped the interview yesterday but the show will actually air tomorrow night (but this may change because the show schedule shifted after the surprise Charlie Sheen interview last night, so check your listings). So anyway, Bret officially spilled the beans and announced the tour. It will basically start at the end of May. In fact, Poison and Motley Crue will both play Rocklahoma. Tickets for the tour go on sale March 18. Tour dates will be announced tonight on SixxSense.com.
Now that the housekeeping is out of the way, here are my thoughts: I am not surprised and I even find myself a little apathetic to the entire situation. I don't think I'm alone. Our friend and reader Kenny Ozz even said to me "I don't like it [the tour] simply because that means Poison will play the same goddamn 10 songs they do every show."
I can't disagree.
While seeing Poison and Motley together is probably as Glam as it gets, I can't help but wonder if both shows will be diluted. Sets will be shortened and we all know that Kenny is right. Poison won't be adding any different songs to their set. If anyone is listening from the Poison camp, I strongly urge the band to play Open Up and Say...Ah!! from start to finish. That would help the set fatigue issue and would pay tribute to the album and give fans what they want. As for Motley? Well, I don't know. I'd tell them to drop "Kickstart My Heart" from the set for starters.
I don't think this tour will be a very long one. I'm thinking one month - max. Backstage would be awesome though...and can you imagine the egos?
I've never seen the New York Dolls. Seeing them would be way cool - without them there would be no Motley.
Live Nation better get with the program on ticket prices. Gas is going up, up, up in America and it will probably be high all summer. Charge too much for tickets and fans will blanche. I don't plan on traveling for this tour but if it comes to my area of Ohio (or the tri-state area), I'll go. Poison shows are always a tried and true sign of summer. Motley is always fun - even if Vince skips every other word when he sings. It's either the realist - or the cynical - in me that wonders how much Nikki Sixx and Motley are getting paid for this tour. I mean, money talks right? And Nikki said over and over he would never tour with Poison. And now he is. Never say never I guess.
So, what are your thoughts on this tour?

And if one is trying to knock themselves out harder than the other, than so be it... Let the games begin!
Like I said, it may actually help them both rise to the occasion especially if The Dolls start givin' 'em a run for their money!
It may be LiveNation that's partly behind adding The Dolls to capitalize on creating more opportunity for them. But I gotta believe it's Crue's and now Poison's bid at increasing their Rock'n'Roll cred that's also putting The Dolls on the bill with them.
It makes 'em look good, putting one of their main influences up alongside them and it also gives them some extra hipness as The Dolls are the REAL deal the kids crave today.
It's gonna be a helluva show, no doubt. I am so stoked for this one, gotta tell ya.
I strongly suggest to everyone and anyone that to think this is gonna happen again, is crazy. Grab your seat right now while you can!
And yes, Metalboy, Rock Sugar is AMAZING!

A press release issued by the POISON camp on Monday indicated that the Bret Michaels-fronted glam rockers and MÖTLEY CRÜE would "co-headline" the tour.
MÖTLEY CRÜE frontman Vince Neil was asked during a November 19, 2010 appearance on the "Elliot In The Morning" radio talk show about POISON singer Bret Michaels' onstage claim that POISON and MÖTLEY CRÜE would celebrate their 25th and 30th anniversaries, respectively, this year by joining forces for a North American trek. "I don't know why Bret would say that," Neil said. "And I hadn't heard about it. People were asking me, and I'm going, 'I never heard that in my life.' And I was getting a lot of Twitters about it. I finally just called my office and said, 'What is up with this?' I was kind of pissed that nobody told me. And they go, 'Look, we have no idea. There was never anything like that [being considered] or that was even being talked about.' But the funny thing is, ever since [Bret] did that and now people are talking about it, crazier things have happened. It could happen. Because you have promoters out there going, 'Hmmm…. Yeah, maybe. Yeah, that sounds like a great package.' You know what I mean?!"
When reporters recently asked Bret Michaels if there was any bad blood between the bands, Michaels laughed: "There may be some friendly competition but there is no bad blood at all on my part. Nikki [Sixx, MÖTLEY CRÜE bassist] and I have spoken several times on the phone recently and the conversations went great." Michaels continued, "Music is a universal language and I am extremely excited that this tour has come together as are the fans, they are truly going to see a great show. Honestly, I could care less about all the mudslinging, it gets nobody nowhere, and after all I have been through health wise in the last year, I am going to try to focus on what does matter which is the show, the fans, fun and personally throwing a hell of a backstage party."
But, to reiterate, Glam-A-Geddon is the name of Poison's solo tour; not to be confused with their dates with Motley Crue.
Second: it's pretty well known that there is interpersonal friction WITHIN Motley Crue, as well as within Poison... which probably makes for very unhappy touring in the first place. Combine that with the fact that Nikki seems to have some sort of beef with Poison, which the Poison guys don't appreciate (why would they?). It all starts to sound like a good show to see, but a horrible show to work on. I trust that Nikki and Tommy will not be able to refrain from shooting their mouths off at some point. I also trust that Bret will remain a smiling professional in public, as he always does. It's started already with the co-headlining/no-they're-just-opening-for-us battle of the press releases.
Having said that, I think it's really sad and short-sighted if they just trundle this tour around North America. By the sounds of it, even a lot of US fans are getting tired of the same-old same-old set lists from these bands. They tour the US so often that everyone has seen them recently... and a bad experience of listening to a tired, croaky singer will tend to put people off coming back next year. The voice is an instrument that needs to be rested (are you listening, guys?).
BUT, I know that Poison's return to New Zealand in 2008 was the surprise highlight of a big music festival. I've never had the opportunity to see the Crue live, but I can attest that Poison CAN be an incredible live act when they have the energy. They opened for Whitesnake and Ozzy that night, and wiped the floor with both of them. Whitesnake sucked so hard that everyone around me went to the bar! I'm pretty sure that I was one of only a handful of people who had gone specifically to see Poison, but the next day in town, Poison was all anyone was talking about. Every record store I went into had sold out their entire display of Poison albums. They were a huge hit here... Mostly because they REALLY brought the energy, and they were very tight and very entertaining. We don't get tired and grumpy about Poison's set list down here, because they only roll through our country once every twenty years, they get F-all promotion and radio airplay, and most people are very pleasantly surprised at how good they are! I'm sure that the same can be said for a tour of Europe, where they could play less dates (with good rest breaks in between) and be very well received... The problem is finding the money to push a tour out of the States in the first place.
Seriously: the whole thing sounds like an awful idea as far as the mental health of the bands and crew is concerned, but a possible winner in forums outside the US.
