Same Name, Different Song - You Choose!
Thursday, December 2, 2010 at 12:01AM
Quick! Choose which song you like better: Kix "Sex" or Nickelback, "S.E.X." I love 'em both because each is unique and catchy as all get out. I always find it interesting when bands record songs of the same name...but the lyrics are completely different. I should make this "Same Name, Different Song" business a regular series here at BBG! Anyway, which do you like better and why: Kix or Nickelback?
KIX - "Sex"
Nickelback "S.E.X"
Awaiting a comment from our friend Kenny in 10, 9, 8, 7...

PRIEST! PRIEST! PRIEST!
THIS IS THE PAINKILLER!!
Locomotive Breath-W.A.S.P. or Jethro Tull?
Oh and Mike, Rough Cutt did a song called house of Pain also. Seriously awesome!
As for the "Nobody's Fault" debate, I have to give it to Aerosmith. the Zeppelin tune is great, but I have to deduct major points for the fact that the Zep song is a ripoff of an old song by blind Willie Johnson, and Zep gives him no writing credits.
The Council of The Cauldron is convened!
Live Wire - AC/DC
Livewire - Motley Crue
I'll think of some more and post tomorrow...
You boyz have got me thoroughly Ace Frehleyed on this one...
Still gotta go into the Metal Mental Archives to come up with more and you all can probably tell what a challenge for me that is...
And just to make it even harder, I'm gonna skip the covers, since that ain't the name game here, anyway. Besides, we'd be talkin' about covers all night, if that was the criteria == tho I will check out Peter Green's version of "Rattlesnake Shake".
That guy is a KILLER. Google him, kidz. Mike, I got his version of "Green Manalishi", which is a Fleetwood Mac single from '70 -- Geez, crazy what happened to that band in 5 years...
In fact, I've got an British Import Archives album of his I picked up when I was in London 9 years ago... but not the live stuff. Can't wait to get these. If you like that kind of torture, I'm sure you love Frank Zappa's "Shut Up And Play Your Guitar, Volumes 1 & 2" KILLER!
And I'll take Motorhead's "Eat The Rich" over Aerosmith's any day..."
In the meantime, I'll weigh in on Mike's "Same Name, Different Song" List:
"Stick To Your Guns" -- I'll take Crue of Bon Anchovy anyday. Got Sweet F.A. too, Snoot -- they are awesome, but still not quite up there with the Crue, IMHO...
"Young Lust" -- Aerosmith by a nose. As much as I love Floyd, The Wall isn't my fave Floyd album... not by a long shot. It's Dark Side, then Animals, then Wish You Were Here, then Meddle and everything before all that before I'll go with The Wall... And Aerosmith -- Pump isn't that great, but this is one of the better cuts. The music is better than the words. I'm goin' with them, just on the sheer fact that it's Glam Metal, more or less and like I said, The Wall, just isn't really my cup of tea...
"Yeah Yeah Yeah" -- As much as I love KIX (Let's not go there or this will be the longest paragraph I've ever typed, and Lord knows, y'all don't want that! -- Let's just say I've seen 'em like 26 times including '82, opening for Cheap Trick at the U.S. Naval Academy -- talk about blowing some lids off -- and before that when they were The Shooz and The Generators...)... So, I really don't need to hear Whiteman's diatribe one more time. If he took that out, or shortened the sh*t out of it, I would say theirs is the better song over Cooper's. But it's Cooper's "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" for me. Listen to it, kidz... That's what you call groundbreaking!
"Babylon" -- as much as I love Faster Pussycat... New York Dolls by a mile! Without the Dolls, there'd be no Faster Pussycat, anyway, not that it counts for anything in a song comparison discussion. (Snoot -- Love Shotgun Messiah! Got to see 'em at the Cat Club in NYC back in the day -- KILLERZ! But I gotta stick with the Dolls as much as I love Shotgun's "Babylon" -- that whole album is Killeracious!)
"House of Pain" -- Gotta go with Van Halen. Rose Tattoo's is killer, to. Faster Pussycat's is "Receptionist Rock", sorry...
"Painkiller" Priest by a mile, and that's my least fave Priest album... Got Backyard Babies, too, tho...
"Bad Boy Boogie" -- AC/DC! As much as I love Crue, pretty much anything by AC/DC trumps them and they'd probably admit it, too!
"Outlaw" -- The Scream! Can't say enuff about this song! What a unique riff, am I wrong? Love Dangerous Toys but this outsmokes any "Outlaw" I've ever heard... BTW, Broken Teeth, Jason McMaster's latest band just SMOKED on Shiprocked! UNREAL! What a Killer Komedian that guy is,too! What a Pro!
"Where Eagles Dare" -- As much as I love the Misfits and despise Iron Maiden, I gotta give it to Maiden.
Is all of this obvious?
Anyway, Mike, gotta say, you really know your sh*t!
If you got more, I'd love to see 'em...
Here's some...
"Heartbreaker" -- Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Pat Benatar, Balaam & The Angel or Dare
"Angel" -- Aerosmith or Gotthard
"Ride On" -- AC/DC or BB Steal
"Inside Out" -- XYZ, Jaded Heart, Billionaire Boys Club or 999
"Fallen Angel" -- Poison, Fate or Niagara
"Chain Reaction" -- Accept or Creamhouse
"Loaded Gun" -- Bangalore Choir, Swedish Erotica or Mad Margritt
"Coming Home" -- Cinderella (who were K-I-L-L-E-R! on Shiprocked!, BTW!), Bad Habit, Cheyenne, Craaft or Tour De Force
"Remember Me" -- Bad Moon Rising or Mae West
Am I getting too obscure?
Check 'em out!
C'mon...
Cheap Trick had their "Heaven Tonight" first and it's much more original even if it does lift from the Beatles a bit (that is Cheap Trick's schtick, let's not forget).
Joe Lynn Turner or no Joe Lynn Turner, as much as I love it, Yngwie's "Heaven Tonight" is pretty predictable and middle of the road.
Cheap Trick's on the other hand is beyond KILLER!
Here's some more for ya:
Play Dirty:
Poison or Smashed Gladys?
Porno Star:
Motley Crue or Buckcherry?
Photograph:
Def Leppard or Nickleback? (like I have to ask)
Misunderstood:
Motley or Bon Jovi? (how many song titles do these guys share??)
Man In The Moon:
The Scream or L.A. Guns?
Jailbreak:
AC/DC or Thin Lizzy? (this is actually a tough one I think)
Jailbait:
Areosmith or Motorhead?
Dreams:
Buckcherry or Van Halen?
Danger:
Motley or AC/DC?
Changes:
David Bowie or Sabbath? (another tough one)
Caught In a Dream:
Tesla or Alice Cooper?
Body Talk:
Ratt, Poison or Kix?
Blind Man:
Aerosmith or Blackstone Cherry?
Set Me Free?
Velvet Revolver or The Sweet?
Rock Bottom:
UFO or Kiss?
Save Me:
Queen, Enuff Z'Nuff, Burn Halo, Beautiful Creatures, Avenged Sevenfold or The Angels? (WOW!)
Is this getting old yet?? haha
Just one more:
Here's one that's the same song but a different title, not glam but still a lot of you will know it:
Mechanix by Megadeth or The Four Horsemen by Metallica?
I agree with you on "Heartbreaker", though the Stones' "Heartbreaker" contains one of "The Greatest Rock Song Beginnings of All Time".
As far as my "obscurities", most of 'em you can check on YouTube, believe it or not.
Now for your latest batch. Great stuff!...
"Play Dirty" -- Poison by a hair, just cuz I regard the "Look What The Cat Dragged In" album as pure art and one of the Top 5 Greatest Glam Metal Albums of All Time. I do love that Smashed Gladys album, though and their "Play Dirty", also. Still can't get over that's a chick singin'. Another one I bought without hearing one note or anything about 'em. Bought it just on the album cover graphics. What a pleasant surprise that album was!
"Porno Star" -- Buck Cherry by a hair. Crue's is just a little too all over the place, IMHO...
"Photograph" -- Def Leppard. What is Nickelback, anyway? hahaha! And Ringo's is better than that crap, too!
"Misunderstood" -- Crue!
"Man In The Moon" -- The Scream by a mile
"Jailbreak" -- AC/DC by a hair
"Jailbait" -- Motorhead by a hair. I do, however, love Aerosmith's "Lightning Strikes" from "Rock In A Hard Place", the same album their "Jailbait" is from. In fact, even though Joe Perry was replaced by Jimmy Crespo for "Rock In A Hard Place", "Lightning Strikes" is one of my fave Aerosmith songs.
"Dreams" -- Buckcherry. This Van Hagar stuff is just generally too AOR for me. It just duzn't Rock like the Diamond Dave stuff.
"Danger" -- Neither of these songs are particularly knock-out. AC/DC by a hair.
"Changes" == Bowie by a mile. Look, I realize, especially on a site devoted to Glam Metal, I should be going for Sabbath, but this is just pure and an absolute classic. There's no denying it's monumental position in the pantheon of Rock.
"Caught In A Dream" -- Alice
"Body Talk" -- Ratt
"Blind Man" -- Aerosmith
"Set Me Free" -- The Sweet (listen to the early Kinks song called this, too!)
"Rock Bottom" -- Kiss
"Save Me" -- Actually, I would not select any of the one's you mentioned. My fave "Save Me" is Lizzy Borden's!
I'll come up with some more, too! Thanks!
"Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)"
Or do we now make it Zep vs. Pat Benatar?, hahaha!!!
