A Cool Van Halen Cover
Sunday, September 16, 2012 at 12:01AM
Like most Americans, I watch a lot of football on Saturday afternoon and evenings in the fall. Last night during the Notre Dame/Michigan State game, ABC used what sounded like a cover of Van Halen's "Dance The Night Away" for one of their bumps. Of course I immediately went to YouTube to try and find said cover, but I didn't have much luck. I'll be honest: I just don't know many modern pop bands and I'm sure some young band covered the VH classic. So, I didn't find exactly what I was looking for... but I did come across a video of Train and Butch Walker covering "Dance The Night Away" and I was impressed. I'm not necessarily a big Train fan, but I think the band did a great job here. Watch:

Train does the song justive.
And while I'm overdissin', is that dude seriously wearing a T-Shirt with the image of his own face on it? That's a read-out right there. Still, a very professional and technically proficient cover.
p.s. I think I was foolish enough to buy Train's first album when I got off track (no pun intended) with so many others and tried to get into their brand of crap, not realizing that, oddly, in the words of Sammy Hagar, "There's Only One Way To Rock" and I think you know by now which way that is!
It sure as h*ll ain't Train's way! Sorry 'bout that!
Huh-uh-lo-oooh Fletch! What does Train's cover of Van Halen have anything to do with your Bosco story? Stay on topic, Fletch!
For which, MB, I was prepared to respond, 'a lot, MB." Stay with me for a bit. Indulge yourself, perhaps.
As I've written before, "I'd rather rock out in the audience than hang out backstage because the former is usually much more fulfilling than the latter." Hence, I'd rather 'dance the night away' where I am almost guarenteed to have a good time (hence, marrying my wife and selecting that song for our wedding party song) versus "sitting on the sidelines" (euphamism for hanging out backstage) at a sporting event.
At the very least, when I walk out of a concert, each and mostly every time, I leave satisfied and feeling good. I don't know if fans at sporting events can say the same thing.
I recently told the following story, so forgive me if I told it here, but back in the day, I was at a work-related "training" (unintentional pun). In order to get the audience comfortable and interactive, The guest speaker asked that each audience member say, one-at-a-time, our names, favorite sport and favorite team. People were replying, "football/eagles" or "hockey/flyers" or "basketball/bulls", etc... When it came my turn, I replied, (I kid you not), "Rock-n-Roll/Van Halen".
Is it any wonder why I get strange looks. There may be only one way to rock, but there is more than one way resolve a problem...or, at least, address one.
That's what this song mostly means to me.
