Hair Metal is alive and well, thanks to these guys!
Congrats to Justin Hawkins for making it back and reforming the band! What a huge talent this guy is! He is the embodiment of the definition of "Rockstar", more so than any other Rockers except maybe Buckcherry's Josh Todd, who's still a distant second in star power and talent when compared to Hawkins. Regardless, Buckcherry is the only other modern rock band that's done as much as The Darkness, maybe more, initially paving the way to Bring Back Glam! simply by hitting radio upside the head with a dose of REAL Rock and Roll with one single shot across the bow in 1999, "Lit Up".
That single song stands as so far superior to anything the bands most on here fearlessly adore such as Nickleback, Incubus, Audioslave, Shinedown, Sevendust, Tool, Slipknot, Foofighters, System of a Down, Linkin Park, Avenged Sevenfold and all that other crap Borefest nonsense you've been fooled into thinking is actual Rock and Roll!
Contrary to Toddwiggy, as with most fans, I think The Darkness' new album, "Hotcakes", is a marked improvement over "One Way Ticket", which really only had one good song on it, the title track. It actually runs a close second to their debut album, "Permission To Land".
Though I detect a hint of parody and a bit of a wink from the band, their brand of humor runs circles around the blatant doofiness of Steel Panther and the like who are mining similar Hair Metal Territory.
Actually the broader success of The Darkness, despite the historical hiccup when Hawkins had to put the band on a two year hiatus while he detoxed, may stem from their ability to catch a wider net of musical influences back to early Queen, Sweet and AC/DC, not just the 80's staples of Def Leppard and Bon Jovi where Steel Panther are stuck (not a bad thing except for the tiresome potty mouth lyrics).
I look forward to seeing The Darkness on TV on the 23rd. And the fact that they're touring with Lady Gaga is exposing even more people to our great music, instead of that "Boneyard" Shite!
p.s. let me know what other sh*t bands I overlooked to add to my list of UNROCK acts like Nicklehack and Sevenbust, etc.
Cuz I'll be at the show!
As soon as I saw The Darkness were playin' NYC but don't have the bread. Like Kenny O sez, I hope they tour the U.S. but for some reason (probably falsetto averse rednecks) they avoid Florida.
Otherwise, I would hop over to Tampa, which would be the most likely Florida town they would play, as it's the most Rock and Roll. If they make it down here, I'm there, for sure! If not, I'll go hit NY or MD, since you know they'll play NYC again and I could see 'em playin' Baltimore (another big East Coast Rock and Roll Town) next go around.
In the meantime, have a great time at the show and I want to hear all about it from a "Live" perspective. At least I can still see 'em on TV, a fact that is amazing in itself!
