DVR Alert: Five Hours of Guns n' Roses

If you've got cable, then you'll want to mark you calendars and set your DVR for a five-hour Guns n' Roses special set for March 9. VH1 Classic will air the band's 2012 concert at London's O2 Arena as part of the special. There will also be an hour-long Guns n' Roses video block and a rebroadcast of That Metal Show featuring Axl Rose.

Guns n' Roses were just added to the Governor's Ball festival set for June 7-9 in New York. Then there was the Rocklahoma announcement just a few days ago. All this Guns n' Roses news makes me curious. The band just did a Las Vegas residency and a tour before that. I wonder if all this means Axl's Roses are ready to record a new album?

Here's a preview of the O2 performance.

How about a real album ? One that doesn't involve the words Chinese or Democracy.

Right, GNR. Now that Rose has pretty much settled on a line-up with Ashba and Bumblefoot -- one that has a bit of a track record as song writers -- maybe he can finally set about making a real ROCK record.

What a ludicrous notion he had when he made "Chinese Democracy" -- to intentionally make an album that is challenging to listen to. Maybe he's learned to make an album people will WANT to listen to!

Pretty silly a channel that doesn't broadcast in HD is showing a concert that was specifically shot in HD for release in theaters. Hopefully Paladia will show it as well.

I for one have no problem with the current Guns N' Roses and GN'R is in my top 3 favorite bands ever. Anyone who was left from the original 5 signed the rights of the name over to Axl so he can do what he wants.

To me, that would also seem to include recording whatever kind of album he chooses. A true artist creates what satisfies themselves. If other people (in this case, the record buying public) dig it, that's great. If not, oh well. If you don't like 'Chinese Democracy', you're totally entitled to your opinion. But thinking a band should write music based on what people MIGHT want to hear is silly. That's great for pop artists or those who are only in it for the money. I don't love every song on the record, but there are some great tunes on it. Songs that I watched evolve through live recordings and leaked demos...and definitely songs I'd much rather listen to than just about anything on popular radio.

I understand why people prefer the "original" Guns (I honestly do as well), but that's probably never gonna happen. So what I don't get is why every time there's a GNR news story posted online, people constantly complain about the band. It's been 20 years...Get over it! I saw the original band 7 or 8 times so I'm fine with my memories of those shows. I don't see the need to bitch and moan about it...not like its gonna change anything.

[Written is style somewhat reminiscent of Metalboy!]

Point's gotta' dick. I mean, Dick's gotta' point.

There are a bunch of knuckle dragging basement dwellers (to call them troglodytes is to waste a good illusion . . . see what I did there?) who obsess about the past with GnR. Everyone has moved on. Sides have been chosen (Stradlin). Hell, in some cases, people refuse to choose sides (Duff, Adler when he is doing well). You can't go home again and the original band doesn't want to either.

Even 'Chinese Democracy' had its moments. But what would one suspect when it is the result of ego and soul-crushing doubt colliding in slow motion over the course of over a decade? And you thought your last employee evaluation was difficult! So make what you want, how you want, when you want, and do a tie-in with Walmart. What is the worst that could happen? People don't like it? Well, that has gotta hurt . . . Reed at least, he is the sensitive on the ivories.

GnR is the Tyson of metal, except the second act is lucrative, has more fans, and doesn't involve Broadway (wait a minute . . .). And no one, I mean no one, even bothers to consider the weirdest part: there is a former member of the Replacements taking a paycheck in GnR right now. I mean, that is the odd thing about all of this. "Don't Tell A Soul" sounds oddly prescient right now.

It is a testament to Axl's vitality and charisma that even now, in a somewhat reduced state, he can garner so much publicity. While some may want the fright wig in white spandex (a Moody Blues song) rather than cornrows and whipsaw weight accented by a Fu-Manchu 'stache, many more go to see the show. So do if you do and don't if you don't. It ain't hurting Axl. And it does nothing to change the fact that you never were, and never will be, him.

Cool Ranch Dressing indeed.
