What A Guns n' Roses Meet and Greet Is Like

I'm a huge Guns n' Roses fan, and more importantly, I am 100% Team Axl when it comes to the current divide amongst the fans of the band between Axl Rose and the other four original members. So when it was announced that Axl was bringing the show to Las Vegas for a 12 night residency from October to November of 2012, my interest in attending was immediately peaked. I ended up getting tickets to attend the last night of the series of shows (November 24, 2012). Reviews of the show have already been posted, and the videos are out on Youtube, so everyone can see the actual show for themselves.  The point of this post is to tell you about the biggest gamble I took in Vegas: I bought the meet and greet ticket option for the show!

In all honesty, I went back and forth on whether the extra money was worth it, because it was advertised that you would meet "members of Guns n Roses." We all know that there is only one member anyone wants to meet, and he isn't known for doing meet and greets, or even for getting to the stage on time.  But I thought, "Axl's been more fan friendly these days, it is the last show of the residency... maybe he will show up," and I decided to go for it.

It was a rather disorganized event, but the staff was nice enough. Upon checking in, we were lead to a side room with a private bar where we waited for the meet and greet to begin.  I met a mother/son duo who flew to Vegas from New Hampshire to attend all three shows that week, and they did the meet and greet each time, and Axl hadn't shown up for the prior two that week, so I was disheartened, but I had faith. He would be there!

After a half hour, we all lined up at the door to go upstairs to meet the band. Those with GA floor tickets were first in the line (which included me).  I was about 50 deep in the line of probably 200 to 250 people total. Upon getting upstairs, we saw Robin Finck walking around, but we all stayed in line. It was tough to read the faces of those leaving, and no one was overjoyed, so doubt started setting in.  After 20 minutes or so, we were led into the room and saw who was there... DJ Ashba, Tommy Stinson, Ron 'Bumblefoot' Thal, Dizzy Reed... and NO ONE ELSE! I was bummed, but hey, it was Vegas. I took my gamble and I lost. Such is life.

To their credit, all four of the guys were extremely friendly and personable. They have a tough job because they know that everyone in that line was hoping to meet someone who wasn't there. They took pictures, made small talk and then moved you along.  Thankfully, the cost for this meet and greet wasn't like the KISS or Aerosmith price range ($1000 - $1500), but rather was about an additional $80 or $100. It was still a good time and the show was amazing. Team Axl for life!

The Bring Back Glam! staff will try to live up to your grammatical standards and refrain from such mistakes in the future. As the four core writers are human, there will be many more mistakes to come. Sorry Brian's word choice offended you.

Grammatical nit-picking aside on both fronts, I agree with M as far as "the whole equals the sum of it's parts" concept when it comes to Rock & Roll bands.

One only has to slog through KISS solo albums or Jagger or Richards albums to get the picture.

Listen to Stradlin's (God love him) albums to understand the whole notion of these guys really only happening when in the band. No question, Stradlin was the "genius" songwriter when it came to G'n'R but when it came to his solo material, that stuff didn't even come close to the versatility of his creativity while in the band.

True, there are exceptions where solo stuff is as good as or better than one's group output -- Rod Stewart, for example, but generally, it's rarely the case.

Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, anyone?

I hate to make another joke to make a point: but I like Dick. Great comments, well thought out, and cogently argued. Thanks again for another interesting read [sidebar: I could have met Lynch at Rock n America . . . he was smoking a cigarette, while the rest of the band loaded their U-Haul trailer, and blocking my rental as I tried to leave the hotel).

Choices, choices. Meet them or don't. Pay or not. It's a personal choice (as with the heated "picture" discussion of last year). Like choosing a camp, it is expressing a disposition. Brian's enthusiasm sells me on his opinion and I can respect it as a consequence.

This M. is something else though. It's fine to go grammar police every now and again. It is also fine to point out an inconsistency. But the "team" tag predates your reference point by quite a few years (even, gasp, past the South Park movie . . . far, far past). New usage isn't the same as original usage.

And your overall point is better if you refer to the power of the _original_ line-up rather than _the_ GnR (but see final jab below as a partial qualifier). Try your hand at Deep Purple (or, let me make it easier, Rainbow) and your head would pop aiming for a consistent POV. And I suppose you leave Adler out of the "mix" because . . . (to quote Bill Bailey) well?

Not trying to get your ascot in a bunch M. I will assume you are a fan of Lang films and leave it at that.

Oh, what the heck: Bonafide is a band. "Bona fide" is a reference to authenticity. I won't ask how you pronounce it though. That would be cruel.

i too went to a meet and greet in birmingham uk last year, it was great to meet the guys but knew Axl doesn't turn up to these things (unless ur a paid model to go back stage and paid to sit in the audience) like i said it was great to meet those who turned up back stage, Dj, Frank Ferrer Dizzy Reed and richard but 10 months on we are all still waiting for the goodies we were promised at the gig but told they would be sent on to us, still waiting and many emails later.. still no goodies!

yes axl is amazing...once he dies people will realize how amazingly great he is! there has never been or will never be another axl rose. He is a musical genius and a natural performer. All geniuses are insane and tortured souls. I love that he is a pompous jerk he can get away with it!!!
