Black Veil Brides In Utah - Live Review

Today's post is provided by DJ, a regular commenter here at BBG!

Wednesday night I got a chance to go to the Complex in Salt Lake City to see Black Veil Brides and their Church of the Wild Ones Tour.

After shopping and dinner to kill time, me and the brother get in line. Judging by the people in line I'm starting to think that the band is starting to get the credit they deserve. There were about a million (okay a few hundred) teenage girls still, but the mix was more metalheads, a lot of younger kids, teenagers, and many more adults than I expected. The line was a joke which stretched halfway down the street. We stood in the freezing cold, but not too long as it only took us fifteen minutes to get to the front of the line. Once inside, we purchased our T-shirts, ($50 dollars later) and waited around for the first band. I can't remember their name but they were just a local band. It was more death metal and deathcore, which isn't really my cup of tea, but I got their CD just to give it a try, at least that's what is keeping the metal alive.

If Black Veil Brides wasn't Glam enough, the music playing before the second band William Control was! They were busting out Motley Crue with "Girls, Girls, Girls," Van Halen's "You Really Got Me" and even some Iron Maiden. William Control was a joke! It was pre-recorded techno, with a guy singing over the top of it. They had a bassist that was hardly playing. I didn't know any songs, so I wont go into detail. If you want your ears to bleed, look them up. As show time carried on, they blasted Pantera, Metallica, and Guns n' Roses as Black Veil Brides were about to go on. I like Black Veil Brides as much as the next guy, but I don't want to hear their name being chanted when Pantera is playing. Anyway, the Brides opened up with the two first songs off the new album, "Exordium" and "I Am Bulletproof" which were a definite highlight for me. Then they played "New Religion" which is probably my favorite Black Veil Brides song, but unfortunately it didn't do so well live in my opinion. The other songs they played early on were "Resurrect The Sun," "We Don't Belong" and "Wretched and Devine" which all transferred live. Andy and Ashley looked like a cross between Nikki Sixx and Marilyn Manson. The guys in Black Veil Brides mentioned looking up to bands like Generation X and Motley Crue and Andy even said "We wanted to kick their ass someday" then they covered Billy Idol with "Rebel Yell" and the whole place went totally crazy. Other songs played were "Rebel Love Song" and "Youth and Whiskey" which were astoundingly amazing. The only bad parts about the night were William Control and "New Religion." Everything else was perfect and fit in perfect. The last song they said they were gonna play was "Fallen Angels." This obviously got the crowd worked up, wanting one more song. They came back out and played "In The End," which was a perfect closer. All in all it was a good night minus William Control. If you have a chance to see Black Veil Brides, you should go. You will not be sorry.

(Oh by the way Metalboy! asked if they used backing tapes: they did for "Exordium" and that was it. Jinxx came out and played violin when needed in the song.)

DJ, sounds like a great show.

On a different note,do NOT go to Bon Jovi. You will die of boredom. Way too many new mellow songs and only a few old ones. Save your cash. Not worth seeing anymore.

GNR, saw them in Toronto on Feb 17th. He played 2 and a half hours but there were a ton of songs from the new album. I was hoping to hear more old stuff so came away disappointed.

I found the last album too mellow and the new one seems to be like that too, from what I heard at the show.

DJ! Great review and great to know backing tapes were only confined to one tune, "Exordium", where they were needed as some background instrumentation and used sparingly. Hopefully, this will mute the naysaying, disparaging trolls who sometimes appear on here once and for all!

It's also so cool Jinxx came out with the violin. I assume that's him peppered throughout the new album, too.

Also, cool they name checked Billy Idol's first band, Generation X! Listen to their first two records, their self titled debut and the Ian Hunter produced, "Valley of the Dolls"! The third one, "Kiss Me Deadly", is cool but not as good as the first two.

I really hope to catch BVB soon!

Thanks for your writing, DJ and thank you, Al, for postin!

I caught BVB here in Pontiac MI Feb 22 and the band put on a great show. The audience made it a bad experience. It was 95% 14 - 17 year old girls and the entire time they pushed and shoved in a jam packed general admission facility. Little girls in hordes now scare me. It was like the old videos of the Beatles.

Hey, Reptile -- Sounds awesome to me! Throw me in a mosh pit like that any day! Oops, forget I said that! i forgot it's not 1977 and I'm not a member of Led Zeppelin.

Surprised you went to see this drek. Dudes are BEYOND a joke. Music for 16 year olds. Pass.

Yeah, 16-year-old Rock and Rollers! I was listening to Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, The Who, Bowie and more when I was younger than that. So I guess that music is for 16-year-olds, too, is it not, Blaxpheme?!

Rock on!

Awesome - can't wait to see them this week. I disagree with repilebvd. I saw BVB at soundwave, and was crushed between lots of 14-16 year old girls. Don't get me wrong, I'm not a dirty old man. But, being crushed by female children is a lot nicer than being crushed by hairy old men who put the boot in and try to take your spot. As has happened to me many times before.

GNR - Awesome clip. That is the Bon Jovi I used to love. I get that we're not 25 anymore but I miss this energy and edge they used to have. It's gone now.

I get evolution but they have moved away too much from who they were. Not much of their old selves are left and the new stuff doesn't cut it for me. Oh well. At least there are lots of other bands who still believe in where they came from.

Hahaha!!! Christian! I AM a dirty old man, but you found the real reason why it's not the worst thing to be crushed by 14 to 16-year-old girls.

Putting the boot in, indeed! Hahaha!!! You nailed what my experience was like seeing Accept, point blank, a few years back, and I gotta say, that's exactly what it was like.

Fortunately, I befriended these huge German Sabaton freaks and one of the dude's girlfriends AND between the three of us boys, we took it upon ourselves to block any "chess move" attempts by the boot boys behind us from wedgin' in.

Needless to say, I'm looking forward to seeing Black Veil Brides when they hit Florida, on the Vans Tour, no less, in late July.
