We Should Talk About Circus of Power

Circus of Power were not a Glam band. They were, however, dive-bar sleaze and that's good enough for me!

The New York band formed in 1986... and was immediately lumped in with "hair" bands. The band released five albums and called it quits in 1995. The band has a fairly active website and reunited for a gig back in 2009.

You can order the re-release of the Circus of Power self-titled debut via Rock Candy Records.

Here's one of my fave Circus of Power tunes. Discuss.

I liked a few of thier tracks - i should really dig that album out and give it another listen its been a while.

May i also say - R.I.P. Clive Burr - original Iron Maiden drummer who sadly passed last night.A great man who i had the pleasure of meeting many many years ago.

My buddy had a 1980s Ford Tempo with a jacked up Alpine Stereo and colored windshield wipers for some reason, he would just CRANK this Circus of Power album and the one right after it.

Good times ! And yes more "down trodden" gritty than say your average GLAM ban.

Circus of Power fall into the same category as Spread Eagle and Love/Hate. Not really Glam, more sleaze, and just kick ass music.

lots of bands were lumped in with hair metal (so hate that term) but weren't exactly a huge departure of that wither. Circus was definitely more GNR than Poison but, in my humble opinion, not a huge difference in glam and sleaze. Style wise to some degree but, to me, just a slightly different flavor. Sea Hags/Junkyard/Spread Eagle closer to Circus than say Pretty Boy Floyd but better than say...Tiffany or todays version of Tiffany, Taylor Swift...lol.

their third album, Vices, was a masterpiece, especially the title track. The singer had kind of a Jim Morison swagger with just a hint of growl in his voice. Great great stuff.

Loved COP. Check out the bonus track on L.A. Guns' "Waking the Dead"... they cover "Call Of The Wild", with Ricky Maher playing guitar. Kicks ass.

Never really could get into CoP, though I do like that style. Some NYC bands I like better in the same vein, from the same time, are Law & Order and Spread Eagle.

Saw these guys like 10 times in NYC mostly at The Cat Club. Used to wind up seein' the singer all the time practically everywhere downtown, mostly in the East Village and the Bowery -- Scrap Bar, A-Bar, Rokbar, CB's, etc.

Even got drunk with him a few times cuz he was "friends" with my girlfriend at e time, though I think they were formerly an item before she got he claws into me.

As far as the music goes, I've got all their sh*t, original press, natch, including some promo singles (a byproduct of livin' there), but, personally, Pretty Boy Floyd blows the doors off 'em!

And Bob's right, "Vices" is best. And as Mike indicates, "Call Of The Wild" may be their best track.

Thanks for the memories, Al.
