'Nothin' But A Good Time' -- A Perpetual Summer Jam

When I think of summer songs, Poison's "Nothin' But A Good Time" is a great example of a fun, summer song. Bret Michaels just performed the song at the Full Throttle Saloon in Sturgis, South Dakota with friends Sebastian Anderson and Kyle Cimino of the Nigel Dupree Band. Good times.

So true. Open Up was the soundtrack to the summer of '88 before college started. Just a part time job in the PM and the beach during the day! Life was stupid simple.

This video intrigued not cuz of Bret, but those dudes feelin all awkward on stage. Seemed like regular joes who got up there! One guy even tried to dance a little! Then reality struck and he thought better! :). Not chiding him, I may have acted similarly. Nah, I woulda rocked!

Yeah Kixchix, I'm with ya. hard to believe that was 25 years ago. I was 19 and didn't have a care in the world. My question is, where are the rock songs of today that have that, "nothin' but a good time" vibe? I know there are retro-style new rock songs that are still fun, but they generally aren't popular with the mainstream. It seems to me like most of the popular rock today is whiney and depressing, much like that Asking Alexandria song that our beloved Allyson thinks is so great.

Bob, don't know. I think when our generations kids are 18 then perhaps they'll get lucky and have good stuff. My kids are young obviously some in my generation have 25 year olds. not me. started later.

Also remember Lou Gramms "Midnight Blue" was huge that summer I believe. One of my all time faves.

My new fav summer jam, "summertime" off Bai Bang's new album. Great tune as it demands to be played at max volume :)

Phew, you guys have got to be kiddin' me. Dreck Mikedwell blasphamizes himself EVERYTIME he performs "Nothin' But A Good Time" (or any other Poison classic, for that matter.

I had to personally suffer through his anticlimactic LCD solo M3 performance at Merriweather Post Pavilion this past May, following Twisted Sister burning the shed to the ground. What a joke Blech Micfails continues to be.

Bob, there are plenty of great "new" bands with the "Summer Vibe", many of them Swedish, many touted by Allyson and her Merry Band of Bring Back Glammerati here, it's just that the powers that be here in America refuse to help those bands over the wall. Try:

Reckless Love "On The Radio", The Darkness "Everybody Have A Good Time", Wildstreet, "Easy Does It", Crazy Lixx "Heatseeker", De La Cruz "Cherry Bomb", Beautiful Beast, "Wet Hair In A Waterslide", Diamond Lane "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and Santa Cruz, "Let's Get The Party Started" are just the tip of the iceberg.

Kixchix, you are SO on it with Lou Gramm's "Midnight Blue". What a primo slab of 80's Summer AOR.

Here's a few other great "Songs of Summer" from The Heyday of Hair Metal:

Krokus "School's Out", Judas Priest "Wild Nights, Hot & Crazy Days", Sleez Beez "House Is On Fire", Dirty Rhythm "One Summer Night", Vince Neil "Fine, Fine Wine", RATT "One Step Away", Sweat Cheater "Summer", Keel "Cherry Lane", TNT "Indian Summer", Quota "Hot Summer Nights", Pretty Boy Floyd "Summer Luv", Van Halen, "Summer Nights", David Lee Roth "Goin' Crazy", Honeymoon Suite "New Girl Now", Y&T "Summertime Girls", Razzle "Summer Job", Autograph "Blondes In Black Cars", Lancia "Sweet Melody", Blue Tears "Rockin' On The Radio", Fate "Beneath The Coconuts", Hanoi Rocks "Malibu Beach Nightmare", Iggy Pop "Here Comes The Summer", Femme Fatale "Heat The Fire", Joan Jett "Summertime Blues", Type O Negative "Summer Breeze", Swingin' Thing "Hazy Lazy Crazy Daze Of Summer", Van Halen "Dancing In The Street", Y&T "L.A. Rocks", Sweet Savage "Summer Song", Zebra "Wait Until The Summer's Gone", Brass Kitten "You Can't Hold Back The Young", Pharoah "Without You By My Side", Tuff "Summer Goodbye", Xavier "Ace In The Hole", Skitzotik "Miami Madness", Private Toys "Saving It All", Cutlass "Missing You", In The Pink "Under Summer Skies", Axé "Burn The City Down", Rough Justice "Summer Downtown", Syre "Summertime", etc., etc. Please add, kidz!

And, last but not least:

Ah, "T", you mentioned Bai Bang, a band not too many BBG!er's are familiar with but should be. Get your head out of the sand (hopefully, beach sand), kiddies, and check out Bai Bang's classic "Cop To Con" from 1991:

Aaaaah, metalboy! my good sir. Lots of great tunes mentioned in your comment. Back in the roaring 80s, every June, I would start working on a new mix tape that would be the soundtrack to that Summer. A couple more worth mentioning: Whitesnake - Bad boys, Sammy hagar - Boys night Out, and pretty much anything from TT Quick's Metal Of Honor album. MB, as I said in my comment, I know there are lots of bands out there keeping that vibe alive today. My point was, as you also stated, that they don't get much play here in America which is sad. I work on a college campus, in Southern California no less, and most of what the 18-22 year old crowd here listens to is pretty morose. It's almost as if they don't want their music to be fun or something. I don't get it.

Metalboy! Poops for mentioning Sweet Cheater and In The Pink, two Boston bands that were huge here BUT never made it out of New England..btw, In The Pink's Tommy Dempsey can sing the sh*t out of that song, Under Summer Skies'..I MISS when life was super easy with no real life problems..

Bob! Rockin' Regards to you as well, my Fair Metal Friend. Speaking of METAL, I, too, have T.T. Quick's "Metal Of Honor" album! that SMOKES and that singer's STILL got it! I saw him with Accept last Summer and I'm surprised he wasn't shattering glasses on the bar, he was so blood curdlingly awesome!

Hahaha!!!, Jimbo. For sure, you're givin' me the "POOP" on what's up with your Hair Metal History, regardless of the typo.

I would like to know more about Boston's Sweet Cheater. The one I was referring to is from Seattle and shoulda, woulda, coulda been signed back in the Heyday of Hair Metal. Check 'em out on iTunes. A lost gem from the 80's and finally released by Perris Records in 2006, it is jaw droppingly great.

Sounding like the bastard child of RATT and KIX, their album ROCKS from start to finish and I'm also more than confident you will find the name of their sole release quite amusing, as well.

Preview it on iTunes and buy it on Ebay for anywhere from $6.50 to $10 bux. YOU will NOT be disappointed, boyz n' girlz -- THAT you can be quite sure of.

What the h*ll! Where did I get Seattle. Dude, did you see these guys? Man, they shoulda been signed! They probably would have had they moved to L.A. I gather you have that CD. Killer from start to finish. Particularly, album opener, "All Fired Up" plus "I've Got You" and "Summer". People, pick this one up! That is, if you wanna ROCK!

Yeah, DJ, particularly their masterpiece first album as it was released in the Summer. It's interesting to note that C.C. is the key to that band's success. He has always been one of my main "Heroes of Hair Metal" along with Sixx, Keifer, Crosby and Purnell. It's the main songwriters of the genre that I most respect.
