Discuss Scorpion Child

All bands pay tribute to their influences, but Austin, Texas based Scorpion Child might be taking that notion to a whole new level. It's one thing to be a modern band with a throwback sound. It's quite another to be a modern band with a genuine classic sound so authentic, the Led Zeppelin comparisons are actually legitimate.

Scorpion Child just released a full-fledged, self-titled debut and I have to say I'm impressed. Then again, I'm a classic rock lover of the highest order. Let me know what you think.

Seem like a good band but would rather have some more originlity than in that clip.

These guys are amazing! Now I know why lots of BBG!er's have them on their "Best of 2013" lists. Had I known about them, I probably would have put them at #2 under Sabbath!

I do here snippets of Zep in there. They're definitely coppin' Page riffs and the singer is nodding to Plant, albeit in his own way. But they're doing it so well and enough of it you can't put your finger on, they pull it off.

Other bands have made careers out of aping Zeppelin -- Kingdom Come and Whitesnake ("Still Of The Night" anyone?) particularly come to mind -- but that stuff has that 80's production sheen this intentionally lacks.

And these guys are definitely going for early Zep with some early Sabbath and Free, too. And they definitely watched the 1968 Tammi Show clip of Zeppelin like a hundred times as this video apes that to a tee, which is cool.

On the season premiere of "That Metal Show", Eddie Chump recommended it. Usually, that guy is just so wrong in SO many ways but he often gets his recommendations right.

Remembering it on people's lists here plus Chump's, reco, made me check it out immediately Saturday night and I was not disappointed.

I've been listening to it ever since!

p.s. Oh, and nice Black Flag T-shirt.

It's fantastic. But it's not original. Sure I can see wearing your influences on your sleeve, but if your band sounds exactly like Led Zeppelin then it's a problem, for me anyways. If you tend to try to hard sounding like somebody, you don't usually write what you feel, and rock n roll to me is all about the feeling. So yeah, I'd like something more original. This is still good though.

Yeah, they were in my top 10 list. I had a chance to see them with Clutch but wasn't quite a fan yet. Regret it now

this album has been out for almost a year now, and it is awesome. There is actually quite a bit of musical diversity throughout the songs -- definitely an album that requires multiple listens to digest. Trust me, there are bands out there right now that are aping the Zeppelin sound way more than Scorpion Child...Barbarian Overlords immediately come to mind.

I'll check out Barbarian Overlords, Bob. Unlike DJ, I'm into practically ANY band that apes Zeppelin. Except Dread Zeppelin.

Metalboy!, my good sir, I think you'll like Barbarian Overlords. I like them too, but original they ain't. :)

Original, Shmoriginal, if it's GREAT!

Hey, Christian? Ever seen someone without being a fan first? Set yourself free, Brother!

No disrespect to the mighty Zeppelin! I'm a huge fan. Listening to Kashmir as I type this. Scorpion Child is pretty good. I'm just looking for the next huge step in Rock n roll. Something different. I love Zeppelin though, they stand the test of time.

With ya there, DJ.

"Where is the next Cobain? doesn't mean give me a Cobain clone. It means gimme the next evolution in Rock & Roll.
