Everything Old Is New Again
I guess the saying everything old is new again is true because I've noticed a lot of modern videos copying iconic clips from the 80s and 90s. Now let me say I only know of the pop videos I'm discussing today because they play on repeat constantly at the gym. So I have to hear these songs constantly. Now let me say that I love the video below for "Fancy" because it's based on one of my favorite movies of all time, Clueless. The song is by Iggy Azalea. It's not my taste, but it was basically the biggest song of the summer, so what do I know?
Then there's Ingrid Michaelson's clip for "Girls Chase Boys." It's a remake of the Robert Palmer classic "Simply Irresistible." The song is catchy enough but not really my cup of tea. Still, I guess I appreciate the deference shown to Palmer and the 80s.
When you're talking glam specifically, Bowling for Soup made a video for their song "1985" a few years back. In part of the video, the guys in Bowling For Soup become Theatre of Pain era Motley Crue. I'm going to look at this as flattery and not mockery. So what's the deal? Is everyone just out of new ideas or what?

I saw this Ingrid Michaelson thing not too long ago.
Oddly, the trippiest is the Iggy Azalea vid because of it's celebration of all the sublimity that is, of all things, "Clueless". More subtle to spoof an iconic movie rather than mere videos, IMHO, save for the hilarity of the Bowling For Soup video.
Would love to see a Death Metal version of the "How Soon Is Now" video by The Smith's or some sh*t like that, however. Hell, I'd like to hear a Speed Metal cover of "Smooth Operator" by Sade, while we're at it.
