Rival Sons Release New Single

Rival Sons, an amazing young band with a great classic rock groove, has a new single streaming online now. The song is called "Hollow Bones Pt. 1." The song is from the upcoming album Hollow Bones. Good stuff.

I'll probably take crap for saying this, but these guys have proven themselves to be a one trick pony. they've been around for seven years, and have basically been writing the same song over and over again for at least the last four of those years. I get that they were doing the retro classic rock thing before it was trendy, but they simply don't have the song writing chops to keep their sound interesting.

Amazing live band.

Their studio releases seem to lack something though.

I actually think this is pretty good. Where it stops short for me is the consciously lo-fi guitar tone. I get why they're doing it but a little less Jack White and a little more Tony Iommi incorporated into their sound would go a long way to keep me listening.

One trick pony ?

1) Awesome, awesome live band with such energy throughout each performer on stage.

2) They are on album #5/6 depending on if you count their EP as one since 2009. How F*IN awesome is that ? Who does that in this day in age and tries to keep on making new sounds and new songs that fast. They don't dwell on an album they just give you more.

3) And speaking of albums, if you really listen to them vs. just comparing them to a cool retro/Led zeppelin sound, you would realize the diversity in each album with respect to sound, lyrics, type of rock, etc... They rocked in the beginning with just some indie crash rocktacular songs, then went a touch main street with pressure and time, then totally switched to a european type sound on head down, back to valykrie which is tough to actually describe to a casual rock listener, but yet so good.

4) Ummmm... they were picked to open for the one and only Black Sabbath on the final tour. Not just a leg of it. The whole tour.

5) If you haven't seen them live or listened to anything outside of a video posted on here, then maybe they are a one trick pony :)

Cant wait for the new album.

Cool retro, Led Zeppelin sound...

Cool retro, maybe... Led Zeppelin sound?

Though I do hear Zeppelinesque song structures and riffs, the actual sound is way rougher than Zeppelin. More like Blue Cheer "Summertime Blues" getting married to White Stripes, "Seven Nation Army" with The Strokes officiating but not even 1/16 as good and even sludgier than any of those bands..

I was into these guys for a while, really cool sound, but it kind of got derivative and boring to me. I'll see them open for Sabbath hopefully it'd still be cool to catch em live.

GNR, the condescending tone of your comments toward me not withstanding, I stand firmly by them. I've been following these guys since that really old rehearsal clip of "Get What's Comin'" was posted on YOutube. When they performed on latenight TV for the first time, some kid posted a clip on Youtube of his crappy basement band and tried to pass it off as that Rival Sons TV performance. I had such a love for the band, and such anger toward somebody trying to leech off their name, that I contacted the band and Youtube to get the bogus video taken down. I own all of their releases which, I assure you, I have listened to many times. so, contrary to what your post implies, my opinion is not an uninformed one. I am thrilled that good things are happening for them because they absolutely deserve it. However, as much as I applaud them for continuing to consistently release new music, when I hear said new music, I now find myself underwhelmed because, at least to my ears, it sounds like they are rehashing what they have been doing for the past three rleases anyway: that same mid-tempo groove, and that same production style which, on the surface sounds rough and retro, but actually comes from very contrived and precise knob-turning. Great live band?...Yes...Deserving of their success?...Absolutely yes...One-trick pony from a songwriting standpoint...to my ears, yes.

Amen Dj. You summed up what I was trying to say much more succinctly than I did. Nicely done.

You said you were probably going to get crap for posting this... so, yep I gave you crap. :) Kudos for following the band for as long as I have and yes, the opening bombastic bash of "Get What's Coming" is and was so good.

I just had the boring old drag of someone saying that a band sounds the same. Don't all bands sound the same as a band ? Its such a cop out vs. actually enjoying what they are putting out. AC/DC puts outs Rock N Roll Train and everyone is like yep, that's classic AC/DC. Granted comparing the levels of those types of bands is not exactly apples to apples.

They sing every type of rock song as you know throughout each album from up tempo, to drawn out, to ballads, to screamers, to singers, to bluesy. Every type of lyric for any mood or history lesson you want. I guess I'm just shortsighted in hearing diversity throughout their albums. As with any band you can get bored :)

GNR, you are not shortsighted at all. There are no rights or wrongs when it comes to opinions. and, you're right, I did say that people might give me crap. I forgot about that. LOL
