A Tale Of Two Singers

Look, we're all aging and it isn't 1987 anymore. Still, some of our favorite singers have taken better care of their voices than others. Case in point: Don Dokken versus Jack Russell. The duo sang together on stage Saturday during the M3 Rock Festival. Jack threw it down and Don just faded, and fast. It's kind of sad, actually. Discuss.

Damn. Judging by his size, it looks like Don may wanna change the words from "Into The Fire" to "Into The Fryer"...

It's no secret that dokken's voice has been shot for years. He still has good tone. He just doesn't have any high register range left. If there's a high note in the melody to hit, he'll drop down to the fifth below it as if he were singing the low harmony. That's better than singing nothing at all.

Saw him last year and it was the same thing. I actually saw him about 13 years ago and his voice was shot then. He blamed it on staying up all night drinking the night before with LA Guns. I still love Dokken and Don. I would go watch them just for the memories and to sing along.

Jack Russell was phenomenal at this festival. I couldn't believe how great he sounded!

Agreed with Ricksave. Jack sounded really good during his Great White set on Saturday, one of the highlights of that day.

Damn, it's eating me alive I missed M3 this year, especially Junkyard with Brian Baker. And RATT, of course.

But I'm not dissapointed I missed this. I have it on good authority from one of his superfans who recently had a long conversation with him backstage at a recent show that he's still chainsmoking and putting away the Whiskey.

What a shame it is to be blessed by the Metal Gods with such a wonderful voice, only to destroy it with booze and cigarettes.

I am glad to hear Jack Russel is sounding great these days. Maybe Dokken should take a lesson (literally) about recovering one's voice through better living, though one has to wonder if he could ever regain his after so much abuse over the last couple of decades.

Jack's GW was one of the top highlights of M3 this yr. His voice was so spot on and strong it brought tears to my eyes. Whatever jack is doing I sure hope he stays the course. People truly were blown away at how great the band was.

I've seen Jack at a few times over the past 2 years in small venues and have mentioned on this site a few times how great he sounds. Glad that he got to be on a bigger stage so that more people could figure it out. I picked up the latest CD (yes, I still buy a hard copy) a couple of months ago and it is awesome. By the way, the rest of the band in Jack's lineup is pretty good too. Now if they could only give him the Great White name back. Make the other version "Terry's Great White" or better yet the "Not So Great White"

Haha!!, NC Rocker... I've seen "Not So Great White" numerous times on The Monsters of Rock Cruise and man, are you ever right, Terry Ilous (XYZ) can't sing his way out of a paper bag compared to Russell!

Too bad guitarist Mark Kendall can't hug it out with Russell now that he's gotten his sh*t together. But, h*ll, if Tracii and Phil can reconcile, maybe so can Russell and Kendall. Only time will tell.

Regardless, more power to Russell for making a comeback. Let's hope he stays there.

p.s. And, as I speculated earlier, I wonder if Don Dokken could regain his voice the way Russell has or if it's too late.

Wow, he sounds really bad...Jack on the other hand sounds great. He still puts out great tunes too, nothing like Great White but its still pretty cool. If you haven't, check out his new album.
