Farewell Vinnie Paul
This one is a shock to me. As you can imagine, there is a mass outpouring of affection from metal stars and fans.
I just woke up in Belgium to the news that my friend Vinnie Paul has passed away. Another metal hero taken too soon. Say hello to Daryl for me. Rest In Peace, my dear friend. @Pantera @hellyeahband #vinniepaul

I clicked on Sebastian Bach’s video about the moment he heard of his death on this post. Honestly, I understand that he loves Vinnie Paul and is shocked. But is your first thought to put your reaction on social media? Don’t get me wrong. I believe his sadness and grief. But what in your mind says, “gimme my phone I’m gonna post my reaction on social media”. Strange days indeed.
I acknowledged the loss that Vinnie Paul is in my post.
In the time it took me to reply from your shaking your head in disbelief post, believe it or not thousands of humans have died. Still shaking your head silly? There is a huge difference between empathy and compassion. Read up and use reason and logic.
Yes; you are attached to rock stars and “feel” a “connection”. Get a grip. They are people. I love at awards shows where they do “In Memorium” snippets. It’s like a popularity contest. Is Princes life worth more than let’s say Chris Cornell if 2 hundred more in audience applaud? Art is art. Life is life.
I had to wait ‘till I got home from work but immediately went to YouTube to watch him and HIS brother when it seemed like they were having the most fun before they became a band with a darker vibe.
Check out the videos on YouTube of “All Over Tonight” and “Hot And Heavy”...
This is the Pantera I love, pre-Anselmo and a lot more fun, and funny as h*ll to boot, unlike the Cocaine Cowboys they later became, way more serious and way not all that funny, unless you see the comedy of the tortured antics of Anselmo as unintendedly hilarious like I do ... Enjoy! And God Bless!!!
God Bless & God Speed, Vinnie!
I was a teen living in the Dallas/FW metroplex in the mid 80's when I first heard this band on Z-Rock(greatest station ever!). I was hooked and soon purchased the Power Metal cassette tape. I was shocked that this band was local because I had never heard of them.
Look, I am not a historian on the band but just a fan. I respect the opinions on this thread by others and their comments. Some fans liked the pre Anselmo years best in the Pantera history. Fine but obviously with Phil their careers took off and they became a force in the metal world who never looked back. Many people have stated that Pantera helped breathe life into a rather stale and stagnant metal scene in the early 90's. They were definitely a kick in the ass that this scene needed at that time.
They were always jokesters and goofballs constantly pulling pranks on members of their entourage and other bands. I don't think they ever lost that sense of humor because Dime would not let that happen. That is who he was. Hell, just you tube any of the home videos they released or check out the Behind the Music episode. And yes Phil's battle with heroin put a major strain on the band no doubt and some of these divisions were never mended. Phil was a mess at this time but I never found this chapter in the band's career to be "unintendedly hilarious" like Metalboy. C'mon dude! Don't know if that is your idea of sarcasm or not. Anyway, I thought Pantera would resolve their issues and regroup after time apart and continue on but my dream was shattered on Dec.8 2004. Sorry for the long rant but reeling over Vinnie's death and the realization that both Abbott brother's have left this life way to soon.
I’m just choosing to remember Vinnie and Dime in happier times when their music was good spirited fun as opposed to the Anselmo years which come across as darker times when their music was mean spirited and not all that fun.
Look, I’m all for “Bada*s” just not “Boringa*s”, which, aside from Dime’s killer solos, most of the Anselmo eara stuff is.
The early stuff, as represented in those videos I mentioned in my earlier comments shows how they were Bada*s AND funny, as well as riff laden simultaneously. Now THAT’S Rock & Roll!
