Interesting Feature On Music Biz From 'Rolling Stone'

I've been meaning to post this for a couple days now. Rolling Stone is doing a series on the modern music industry. This post below is really interesting. Basically you don't need any music cred to get an album deal these days. Just a zillion Instagram followers.

Meanwhile actual talented musicians play to 30 people in shithole bars around the planet for beer money.

Finding a viable path to success, however you define it, in these media-driven times is a frustrating thing for bands and fans alike.

But the twin issues mentioned in the article aren't all that new. Finding ways to gain 'traction' has always been an issue . . . whether it is covering up other bands' flyers on The Strip or getting eyeballs to your various media sites. And standing out amongst a slew of fakers, poseurs, and imitators has also been an issue as well.

Most modern mainstream music such as the ones mentioned in this article is more like fast food rather than...well music. Corey Taylor from Slipknot and Stone Sour said something similar to that a few years ago talking about mainstream music and it stuck with me. I see it being true more so the last couple of years or so. I don't know if "artists" are getting lazy or mainstream music fans are just easily amused. When a kid can get 100 million hits on any social media platform for pretty much doing nothing and have it deemed musical, I see that as more Burger King than John Lennon. It's pretty sad if you think about it, there are lots of real artists out there with real talent, have something real to write about, and know the business aspects of this industry because they are forced to take it upon themselves. These people deserve the recognition and respect that they never get, regardless of the musical genre they are playing.
