A New Revenge... Is Good?!?
Sunday, February 10, 2019 at 09:03AM
Today's post is from our friend HIM.
Listen to this:
Am I wrong to be cautiously optimistic? Probably. This could end up being yet another one of those cookie-cutter, here today and gone tomorrow, ‘supergroups’ that never tour, and never release another album. That pattern was perfected (if that is the right word) by Frontier Records: plug-and-play bands that always disband.
This is also a scuffed group of major/minor players: Tim “Ripper” Owens (“Cathedral Spires” is a brief moment of absolute glory during his stay in Priest), bassist Rudy Sarzo (who has played on every B-list metal album ever produced, and a few A-list ones as well), Keri Kelli (no slouch and a guy whose real last name is Fear . . . that’s metal!), and drummer James Kottak (stay for Kingdom Come, leave for drunken antics at an airport that end up with him leaving the Scorpions). This is also a variation on Project Rock (goodbye, Zig-Zag).
But Timothy sounds great here and isn’t wearing that dumb cap. The rest of the band is in good form as well (even if Sarzo was busy forming another group and they had to get Jake E. Lee’s nemesis Soussan to fill in for the video). The sound is modern, but not annoyingly so. The song is simple, but not without some cool moments. The video is what you would expect nowadays.
Even the label, Golden Robot Records, has a bit of cache for those of us who love old school rock and metal. Their roster includes John Sykes, Bach, and freaking Rose Tattoo, as well as King’s X and The Lazys (you know I love that band). Well, it also includes Mi-Sex (?), Fyre Byrd (?!), and Groom Epoch (?!?!). But it doesn’t seem like the Frontier Factory that has made a great AOR band like Hardline sound lame and limp. So there’s that.
I am, as I stated, cautiously optimistic. I like it when older players make newer sounding songs that don’t suck. I will wait and see if the album lives up to the promise. One thing, though, guys: your album cover for Enemies & Lovers looks like a V.C. Andrews knock-off that I would buy at a discount bookstore. It ain’t that hard to make a catchy cover. Those Aussies at Golden can surely fork over a bit more scratch.

But no wonder Golden Robot couldn’t afford the extra $200 to pay some punk to do a great album cover. Just look at the size of the set for this video! Geezus!
And, HIM, honestly, can’t really fully appreciate (how’s that for Metal Diplomacy?) you dig on Ftontiers. That label is pretty much songlehandedly saving our genre. Granted, they’re like the NETFLIX of Glam Metal / AOR but then getting bands like KIX doing an album of all new material (“Rock Your Face Off”) for the first time in decades is a Metal Godsend!
If this is cookie cutter I’ll take a dozen!

Think good thoughts for our pal Ozzy Osbourne! 🙏🏻
Ozzy Osbourne rushed to intensive care with as health concerns worsen. Sorry about the top post. I am computer illliterate

Glad to tip you off to this, Gary. And I can certainly understand how people (such as Jeff and Bkallday) wouldn't like this. It teetered a bit for me. Then I just sorta' gave in to it. If anything, the fact that Ripper wasn't trying so hard made it better to me. If that makes sense. We shall see what becomes of this band. I have, as I said, my doubts.
Jimbo, the answer to your question is obvious: if Sarzo says no, it's no. Sorum must follow the Rules of Rudy when it comes to frequent metal couplings. If you don't, you end up on Frontiers playing drums to a song written by an Italian guy who thinks AOR stands for Asiago Opera Rejects. They reanimated Moussolini and asked him what he thought about Alessandro Del Vecchio. Il Duce's reply: "Nah. Not for me. A bit too flamboyant."
I tease Frontiers, Metalboy! But you have to admit that signing with them is oftentimes a deal with the devil. Del Vecchio has a way of inserting himself into quite a few bands that cross his path and sign with Frontiers. There are mostly bad results. Yes, they are the new Century Media (pre-Sony). They keep some of the legacy bands out there. So they deserve respect for that. Granted. But that Del Vecchio guy buys bands so he can drive them and creates super groups so he can toss them aside.
Hello, Dale. Tell us more about yourself. I sense you like Ozzy. So do I. Do you happen to know Fletch? Have you ever met Crued? I ask because I am curious. Looking forward to getting to know you. And I am glad, as I am sure you are, that Ozzy is out of ICU.
I will listen to this for sure. He can do no wrong in my eyes, hat and all.

Like I have said, "Cathedral Spires" is devastatingly good. And the fact that he put up with Yngwie . . . well, he has to be a good guy. No doubt he struggles to patch together a career. But he has made magic more than once. And he has loyal fans. He is a class act in my book, even if he lowered himself to be on that Gordon Ramsey show (which I watch) when the chips were down at his failed restaurant venture.
And yes, struggles is the right word for his career as a musician. Seems like he always has a few projects on the go but no stability, which is a shame actually.
and that song is pretty good. I like it.
