Farewell Neil Peart

This is just awful news. Legendary RUSH drummer Neil Peart has died. He was 67 and passed after a cancer battle. There are tributes to Neil all over social media. I think every rock musician in the world sent out some sort of note.

"Suddenly you were gone ... " The worst part is he didn't even get to enjoy his retirement. Finished the final tour then got a brain tumor.

Had a thought late last night. Geddy and Alex should get together with Portnoy and Dave Grohl and guys like that and do a Burning For Buddy-like tribute to Neil. Play Rush songs for a couple of hours to raise money for a college fund for Peart's little girl.

Absolute legend.

So, so sad.

I didn’t grow up listening to Rush and only got into them as an adult. Didn’t become an obsessive fan and missed my chance to see them live (which I’ll always be sad about), but I’m much more than a casual fan and probably put them in my top 20 favorite bands of all time. The five album run from 2112 to Moving Pictures is impeccable (and there’s good stuff in the albums that preceded 2112). But some of my favorite songs, and my favorite lyrics from Peart, cone from the more spotty later albums: Time Stands Still from Hold Your Fire, Roll the Bones, Dreamline, and Bravado from Roll the Bones, Earthshine and Ghost Rider from Vapor Trails.

I’ll be playing Rush all weekend and raising a glass to great Mr. Peart.

@Gogmagog - A tribute show is a great idea. There is no reason to raise a college fund for Peart's daughter. His estate is worth many millions. So she will be fine financially.

The tribute show could raise money and awareness for glioblastoma however. That is also what killed Ted Kennedy. An exceptionally horrible form of cancer. - Allyson

Neil was pure class. I admired his wanderlust, lyrics, personality and of course his drumming.

Rush. A band that did it right. No question. Rush is over.

RIP Neil

So sad to hear this. Like most of you, have seen RUSH many times and have a great respect for the Professor. Time to put a RUSH concert DVD in the player and air drum to some great tunes today, RIP Neil, best drummer there ever was.

There is now a job opening for best drummer on the planet. RIP to a man who kept better time than a Rolex.

Even as a devout atheist, I find this reprehensible.

This one goes out to mb! You always love to learn from me. How about this nugget.

Columbine apparently occurred because they were "products of abortion".

According to my sources, Neil is probably in purgatory because of the life he led, and therefore this model of insight will "pray for his soul".

Where does conviction versus mental instability occur?

Go to the gym, bk. This is a question for the grown ups in the room.

Great idea, Gogmagog!

Personally, I was never a fan of Peart’s overplaying, but I get he was beloved by many in the Rock World, including most on this site and recognized for it around the globe.

Beyond a tribute show, Portnoy should actually join RUSH for a tour and who knows, maybe even recording new material.

Great tributes, one and all. I posted mine on the previous post.

Fletch, geesh. Come on, dude. Figure it out, measure out the dosage, and get back up and running again. I mostly ignore when you are off to the races these days (that is my positive approach to things these days).

But even I have to say: "Learn to self-edit." Who needs that sorta' crap on a post about a person who died? Or at least apologize for being a turd in a place that isn't asking, calling, or begging for one.

Im not a huge Rush fan, I don't necessarily dislike them, they've just never been my thing. That being said, it's almost impossible not to recognize and pay tribute to Neil who was a game changer in the world of drumming and rock music. I mean, what can you say that hasn't been said about Neil yet? He had dedication, percision, and truly loved his craft. Then on the flipside you always heard of him being the most normal laid back guy that didn't really care for fame or fashion. Rest In Peace.
