About That Metallica Super Bowl Show
Monday, February 8, 2021 at 04:06PM
Metallica performed a Super Bowl "after party" on Stephen Colbert last night. They did "Enter Sandman" and it was way better than The Weeknd during the official half time show. Honestly, that Weeknd set was not bad, it was just totally odd. Opt for bed over watching live last night? Here's that video of Metallica on Colbert (check out all the different speaker cabinets, used on previous tours):

Speaking of Robert, very cool to see the Infectious Grooves logo painted on one of those road cases.
The halftime show was - in my opinion - a trainwreck. And I actually like quite a few of the weeknd's songs and would likely go see him live is he was playing nearby. But the production was terrible (when's the last time the halftime show took place for 80% not on the field?), and he just doesn't have enough widely known songs/hits to even fill a 15 minute show like that (it was mercifully short).
Going into this, I was curious about one song in particular. Probably my favorite song by him is "the Hills" which frankly has no business in a PG rated environment so I didn't expect it. To me, it made zero sense he even tried to sing a verse of it and a chorus without any of the words that are necessary to give the song its impact. Should have just left that one out, but it was already so short he probably felt he had no other choice.
I also think Blinding Lights is a fantastic song, but even that didn't really have the necessary pizzazz to finish off the set, and the ending was very anti-climactic. Almost like they realized at the end they only had a couple hundred bucks left for fireworks...
GNR, Metallica, or AC/DC next year. Or upgrade Miley Cyrus with Billy Idol because that combination and version of White Wedding (with guitar hero Steve Stevens of course) kicked some serious ass in the pre-show!!!
A few additional observations: (1) I didn't know that Metallica was a duo; (2) Kirk has a really good version of this set stored on his iPhone; and (3) Rob looks as if he might be giving up the 'crab walk'.
Oh, one more thing: Third Rock from the Sun was a great show.
