Hearing Steely Dan For The First Time

This video is just wonderful.

I have never watched a video from Jamel_AKA_Jamal on YouTube before, but I saw this one on the Steely Dan Reddit. It is just so fun and refreshing to watch someone discover a beloved band for the first time. And yes, "Black Cow" is a fantastic track and all of Aja is a damn masterpiece. If you want a smile, watch the clip!

And if you want to know the hip-hop track that most directly samples "Black Cow," well, here you go:

Got a friend who drinks "Spotted Cow" beer from New Glarus, WI. Always changes the lyrics to "Drink your spotted cow and get out of here..."

He seems, as his shirt says, humble and his response seem heartfelt. Some funny moments too. I have seen some other versions of this trend (a trend of which I knew nothing until a friend mentioned it to me). Some of them seem downright artificial and forced. This one didn't. Appreciated something to make me smile today.

As a person who enjoys some of those 'thieving *** rappers' to which he makes reference, let me go a bit older school for a moment. I remember a time and place(s) when "Me So Horny" was all the rage. Yes, the late 80s were an odd time. But I also remember the first time I heard Mass Production's "Firecracker." So that sort of sampling works, for me, on a few levels. It adds something to newer songs and, as Allyson suggested, it also might draw some listeners into the music which it samples. That is a win-win in my book. And, besides (and asides), _Full Metal Jacket_ remains a caustically powerful film; the gin (if you will) to the tonic that was _Platoon_. Enough with the digressions . . .

Though I appreciate “Aja” and your high regard for what is rightfully regarded as their magnum opus, I prefer “Royal Scam” and “Can’t Buy A Thrill”, with “Do It Again” as my favorite track of theirs.
