Picture It: 1993 In Advertising

So I decided to open a time capsule this morning. By that, I mean I opened the February 1993 issue of Guitar Wold featuring Pink Floyd stories on the cover.

The ads in the magazine are a true hoot and a half. Every guitar ad features one of our favorite stars. Then there's the band T-shirt company Rockabilia where you could order by mail... and wait forever for the product to arrive. I know this because I ordered an Aerosmith shirt way back in high school. And in case you are wondering, Rockabilia still exists with a big online store. The shipping is most definitely quicker these days!

Then I saw the ad below and I chuckled.

Ohio natives Slammin' Gladys. The ad is for Washburn guitars and you could send a letter to the company - with $5 - and get a Slammin' Gladys poster.

Everything about the photo used for the ad screams "1993 music scene." You can see the trends changing right in front of your eyes, from hair metal to grunge and the first wave of rap rock. (Click the thumbnail to see the full size ad). Good times, funny memories.

saw slammin’ gladys open (unannounced) on the warrant “dog eat dog” tour at the bronco bowl (r.i.p.) in ‘93. lynch mob was the announced opener and they played in the middle - jani dumped a bag of floor on lynch while he was playing for some reason. one of the best shows. but yeah the blur between grunge and glam was so hard to take for most of us.
btw, sg put on a great show. and then disappeared.
