The Best Rock Videos Of 1998 - Day 2

Remember how yesterday I mentioned that Rob Zombie became a solo artist in 1998? Well, my pick for Day 2 of the best rock videos from 1998 is for his single "Dragula" from the album Hellbilly Deluxe. The track is Zombie's signature song and for good reason: the hook is there and it's melodic enough to cross-over to those who aren't strictly metal music fans.

Also, "Dragula" is the name of Grandpa Munster's (The Count!) coffin car in The Munsters. So Zombie has been true to his love of The Munsters for a hot minute now.

Bonus: favorite hip-hop clip from 1998: NEXT, with "Too Close." I still love this goofy song!

Good song, "Dragula." Catchy, goofy, but with that psuedo-ominous thing that Zombie can do well . . . when he sets his mind to it. His latest, surprisingly, has at least one or two that come close-ish.

And that's the thing with Zombie. He is too self-indulgent. And he doesn't seem to have an outside muse who speaks to him and critiques him as well. White Zombie has that alt-ish (last -ish, I promise) thing going on. Zombie decided he could do better and went solo. And he sorta' did . . . but only for awhile. For a guy who loves cartoonish movies to become a parody of himself has to be either frustrating or he has to be oblivious.

But, when he is focused on the right sounds, with the right players, and the right snippets of yore, he can really do some cool sounding things . . . within a very, very limited space. Same goes for his movies. When he moves outside of his zone and tries to be a bit too much the auteur, he dribbles like Bill Mosley on a hot summer day. Read: not well.

Allyson, I love that you share your love of music of all genres, hater be damned. But, to my ear, never has a band been better named. NEXT? Yup.
