Make It...Big

Glam and big hair go hand-in-hand, don’t they?

Recently, I’ve read a lot of different quotes by a lot of bands saying “…I put my hair up.”

How, exactly, do you put your hair up? (And no, I don't mean in a French twist!)

A few months ago, People magazine created a special 80s issue. The project was bigger than a normal magazine and had a semi-permanent cover, printed on glossy card stock. The magazine featured all the biggest stars of the 80s – and yes – there was a section dedicated to Glam.

In the magazine was a few quotes from the members of Cinderella. I was surprised when Eric Brittingham said he used pump hairspray back in the day. See, I always thought the best way to make hair really big...was aerosol. My bad.

So, how do you really put your hair up big? I can only make my hair so big - and then it just sort of wants to fall back to modern, straight levels. I think "putting hair up" involves a teasing and hairspray combination - but I could be wrong. Even to this day, I am stunned at how big some musicians got their hair in the 80s. I suppose having a perm helped - but come on. Guys like Nitro had hair so big it seemed unnatural - but the locks were definitely real and not wigs. Now I just want to put my hair up - not let it down!

So, ladies and gentlemen, tell me exactly how to make it big!

Well i remember using a concoction of Aqua-net and suger water. You would hang your head upside down and dry the suger water with a blow dryer then shape it with MASSIVE amounts of Hairspray and if you were lucky some chics would hook you up along the way. My balls still ache from those Pegged designer jeans hehe

im a hairdresser and i do lots of 80s rocker styles and mousse and round brushing give lots of volume then finish up with some back combing and hairspray :)

Making it big isnt very difficult when you know how to do it. Just tease from the roots, and then spray with hairspray. But it stands best if a bit of the hair is cut shorter than the rest. I use to tease and spray it, then go do other things, then tease it and spray again.Because it always fell down a bit after the first time. Today I tried with a new hair brusher,

I had a perm (which is almost a must) and then I would rat, rat, rat. Hit it with a blow dryer and then hairspray (pump spray was my choice). It was always a mess then next day when trying to comb through it before a shower, but it was worth the time and pain.

I just kinda rough my hair up alot, and the more I do it the more tangled it gets and the bigger it gets. However, I dunno how to get it massive because I dont have incredibly long hair, just kinda neck length.

egg whites and sugar and tease the hair with it thats what we used to do way back in the day lol

even when i had hair i couldn't get it to go big but try woodglue. of course it does have it's own (painful) problems but it will stay up.

I'd have no problem taking in a night with "Mr. Big." They are on e of the few bands I missed seeing back in the day. Love the song "Addidted To That Rush."

Tease and spray, tease and spray, tease and spray. It helps if you have a bad bleach job, too.

Part of the touring essential were those BIG fucking cans of Aqua Net, either purple or Blue. Stank like hell, but man, it would hold and mold... as long as you didn't mind having a huge helmet of hair.

Our guitar player swore by Aussie Mist.

well i have longer hair, so i just shake it up and mess it up a lot then spray it for a while, it works like that all the time
