Lost Band I Love: Shy

Remember Shy?

The British band is everything that is right with Glam: big hooks, big songs, big hair!

I don't know why we don't talk about them much here. I suppose they had a bit of a troubled beginning trying to get off the ground, but they did eventually sign to RCA...and then a slew of other labels. The band has released quite a few records, gone on hiatus, come back again and apparently we will see a new Shy record in 2011.

I wonder why we never see Shy on any of the 80s festival rosters? The 1987 album Excess All Areas is fantastic and I think Shy would go over well at a big rock show.

Here's the band's biggest hit, “Break Down the Walls.” The guitar riffs remind me of Pyromania -era Def Leppard.

I have this CD and another one, but I have no idea how I got them, unless there was a BBG story about them in the past. They are a good band, I agree, they'd be fun to see live.

Not that this would stop Shy from playing a festival show, but Tony Mills (the singer) is currently fronting TNT. Don Dokken was somehow involved with these guys, either producing, writing, or singing backing vocals (or maybe all three).

Awesome band. I haven't listened to a bad record and they got quite a few. One album got released under a different band name (Shy England). You should check out Excess all areas, misspent youth, welcome to the madhouse, once bitten twice shy, brave the storm. I love their sound...

Chip,

I think Don actually wrote the song I have posted today. I'm not sure if he produced the band tho.

As Shy England they released Misspent Youth. They had a minor hit with the song Give It All You Got. I remember it on some of the Chicago rock stations and maybe on Z-Rock.

Shy have not had a stable line up for some time & Steve Harris (Shy guitarist - not the other one) has been ill for a while. They are supposed to be back in action again though.

Lee Small, formerly of Surveillance, took the helm for a handful of gigs before parting company with Shy in January 2009, he is now once again Shy's vocalist. Small and Steve Harris are working on material for the next Shy album, scheduled for release in early 2011.

Love, love, love this band!!!

I've got every Shy CD and from them, here's what I've got on my iTunes playlists:

1) From "Excess All Areas", the songs, "Young Heart", "Just Love Me" and their cool cover of "Devil Woman".

2) From "Misspent Youth", the songs, "Give It All You Got", "When You Need Someone", "After the Love Is Gone"

3) From "Welcome To The Madness", their superb Glam Metalized cover of the Stone's, "It's Only Rock n'Roll"

p.s. Check out their killer video for "Give It All You Got". I don't think someone could get permission today for what they filmed back when it was made.
