'American Idol' and 'Still of the Night'

I still don't have cable hooked up at my new place yet, so I couldn't watch American Idol last night. Thanks to the poster NC Rocker, I was just pointed to YouTube and contestant Caleb Johnson's amazing performance of the Whitesnake classic "Still of the Night." Holy cow, he did amazing!

Not bad for a young Meatloaf, nice to see American Idol expanding their horizon a bit.

When I heard he was singing this song my first reaction was to panic. Although I thought it would be great, my guess is that over half of the Idol audience hadn't even heard of the song. These are the types of songs that have gotten some of the previous "rockers" voted off the show. But the performance Caleb gave was truly amazing. Not only did he solidify himself as the front runner for the Idol crown, hopefully it will win a few more fans over to 80s rock.

Kid is for real.Check him out on YouTube doing Dazed And Confused from Zeppelin earlier this year.Im sure it's gotta be on there, because he did the song justice, and that's not an easy thing to do.Best thing can happen to him is he gets voted off before he wins, because they'll ruin him if he does win,IMO.

He's definitely got some pipes!

The kid killed it... Good for him. I bet Coverdale would smile at that.

I haven't watched AI since season one.. since when do the contestants get a backing band?

Kid has some pipes for sure

Nice to see the one male judge wearing an AFI shirt.

I'm guessing the other male judge (that does not stand up and seems generally unimpressed) is the new 'Simon'?

Cool voice. More rockers, but I still personally think the show and the whole concept of the show is shit. I'll sing karaoke, but not on tv for the media that dosent care for music. They treat it more like background music. I still like James Durbin though. I guess I'm open minded in a close minded way.

Amazing! I was also pleased to wake up to seeing this front and center on YAHOO!'s home page and all over the internet this A.M.

I'm tuning in from hear on in to watch this kid battle it out. And I agree -- So great to see 80's Rock & Roll front and center again getting all that exposure on this show. Remember Durbin performing with Priest? Huge!

p.s. Cool to see Keith Urbland and, WTH? -- Jennifer Lopez, out of their seats, rockin' out, but as Mike points out, what's Harry Connick Jr's problem? (or should we just call him "Jr.")

I think J-lo's a closet headbanger Metalboy. She was going apeshit when he did the Zeppelin cover too,as was Urban.(Urban is a talented guitar player,so you know he's got the rock jones in him somewhere. Lol) I haven't watched this show in forever, but my wife told me about Caleb and that I had to catch him. That was the night he tore Dazed and Confused apart.I was amazed and watched him ever since.

Bet this kid couldnt name another Whitesnake song, if he even knows Whitesnake did it, as it is. If he likes hard rock, i like folk music.

I watch Idol with my daughter. Caleb is the real deal...bkallday, you have no idea what you are talking about. He claims RUSH as his favorite band, sang Working Man..he sang a Rival Sons song, etc. When he has the choice, he sings classic rock type songs. Its been Idols MO last few years (since Adam Lambert) to have a contestant that can sing Rock stuff. Not so say the show itself is good...lots of crap for sure. What parents will do for their kids..lol.
