New Band - Dust Bowl Jokies

There's a newer Swedish band on the scene these days. They are called Dust Bowl Jokies, which might be one of the worst band names I've ever heard. Regardless, these guys have potential. They are definitely rough around the edges, but that's how I tend to like a lot of bands. Plus, these guys seem pretty eager to put in the work to make it big. Dust Bowl Jokies will even play at Sweden Rock Festival next month. Here's the video for their song "Boots On, Rocks Off" produced by Beau Hill.

THIS is THE BEST THING I've heard so far this year.

AND the smartest thing these guys did was get onto Beau Hill. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Hill I all bout discovering new talent.

He made his mark producing the likes of ALICE COOPER, RATT, KIX, WARRANT, WINGER and many others. And he doesn't just produce but also writes, performs AND arranges.

"Boots On, Rock Off" has all the earmarks of a successful collaboration between a great new band and a great seasoned producer.

As soon as payday rolls around, this is in my collection. Just like when I bought Beau Hill produced albums back in the day.

I hope this question is taken with the sincerity it is intended. when bands from countries where English isn't the first language decide to write and sing in English, do they run their band name and/or song lyrics by native English speakers to see if they make sense? I suppose my question is a bit rhetorical because clearly this didn't happen with the Dust Bowl Jokies. They have a great sound, but their name and lyrics are virtually nonsensical. I've seen this with other bands as well.

Who the h*ll cares, Bob?! These guys just plain ROCK! Have you ever heard of Artistic License?

We'll be here ALL night if we've gotta bring up bands with nonsensical names or lyrics. Besides, I like their name. It's different AND a great commentary on our nation's dust bowl.

Metalboy!,my friend, I'm sure if you pull your claws back in for a minute :) you can see the point I was trying to make. There is a huge difference between lyrics that are nonsensical because that's what rock 'n' roll is all about, (something I whole heartedly support), and lyrics that are nonsensical because of a lack of command of the language. The former sounds cool, the latter sounds silly -- like those old martial arts movies where the English dialogue is dubbed in. That's not artistic license -- that's a lack of understanding of the market you're trying to reach. The Glam Mistress herself thinks Dust Bowl Jokies is a bad band name. Why jump down my throat, and not hers? :)

Good points, Bob.

But so what?

Maybe the beauty of it is the fact they don't have a command of the English Language. But you can bet your a*s Beau Hill obviously didn't care about what gets lost in the translation.

These characters are bada*s and they certainly showed command of the language with the title of this song.

And I happen to like the name and I'm sure that got discussed with Hill, too.

It's just words, man, and even in their broken English, they sound A LOT fresher than all the "correct" boring a*s sh*t out there, where a command of English might be well demonstrated but the words mean nothing at all.

also good points Mr. Metalboy! FWIW, Mr. McLuhan's first name is Marshall, (Unless you were going for a Malcolm McLaren pun in which case that's pretty clever!)

No, Bob, I frickin' forgot. Thanks for refreshing my memory. How could I be so blasphemous as to get wrong such a great man's name !

sound like HANOI ROCKS and HELLACOPTERS, which, for me, is the best compliment, the discovery of the year (with another scandinavian group : ELECTRIC BOYS)

I has the misfortune to see the DBJ at the Harley Festival in Montalivet, France on Saturday. I have seen lots of bands in my time and I can honestly say this set was one of the worst. The lead singer has an ego the size of Stockholm and has a vocabulary limited to the gratutirous use of the word "fucking." For example, "fuciking guitar strings." It's not clever in any language especially when children are present.

With regard to their music, absolutely no finesse just most songs in the key of E major (easy for the guitar solist.). All the songs virtually the same; just loud and racous.

It was so bad, I had to stay and watch!

Why did the egotistical singer wear a native Americn headdress???

Many people around me thought the same....

Absolute rubbish....

Sorry, but I am a musician myself...

Really stupid name, by the way...
