Freedom of Speech. Always.

Reader Comments (6)

Je Suis Charlie!

Think about this country and which political faction is more in favor of free speech than the other!

In the end, we must always unite in favor of the universal truth that ALL, as Americans united, are created equal in the name of freedom of speech above all of our, quote, unquote, "beliefs" and "differences"!

Listen to "Stand Up", (Thinkin' Man's Metal) from Jailhouse, of all unlikely bands! Therein lies the message!

I won't make it political, and I certainly won't go into a digression (which, in a sense, this is) about the actual limitations on our free speech in America.

What I will say is this: any loss of life in pursuit of the idea that we should speak our minds in the face of hypocrisy should be noted. And we should thank those that do that every day. The fact that it is hard to do without being selective is the burden we carry simply by being human.

Sadly, in 2015 theres no longer any such thing as "free speech". The pussification of modern society has led to this. Political correctness has completely derailed a lot of our given rights. It sucks that i have to raise a child in this pussified environment, but bet your ass that ill raise em how i want, with absolutely no regards to satisfying hipsters or the pc police.

"Think about this country and which political faction is more in favor of free speech than the other!" ??????

Then read bkalldays post.

I'm wondering if those are two separate political factions we speak of ?

Freedom of speech in this country ? But nothing offensive, right ?

It is never as simple as left or right, or even moderate, when it comes to free speech.

You can blame whoever you want, and slam whoever you wish, but that sacred right has always been limited . . . in this country and in other places. And it has nothing to do with trends or PC or what have you. You may decry any of those things, and they may in fact cause short term bouts of hysteria, but the right to free speech is not, nor has it ever been, unlimited.

Live as you wish, raise your kids how you want, and treat others with that as a baseline for your conduct (to each their own in fair measure and to the degree that their conduct and opinions do not endanger or threaten your right to live as you see best).

More to the point of the initial post, we can all grieve the loss of a human life. And, in moments like this, that is enough.

“He who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that. His reasons may be good, and no one may have been able to refute them. But if he is equally unable to refute the reasons on the opposite side, if he does not so much as know what they are, he has no ground for preferring either opinion... Nor is it enough that he should hear the opinions of adversaries from his own teachers, presented as they state them, and accompanied by what they offer as refutations. He must be able to hear them from persons who actually believe them...he must know them in their most plausible and persuasive form.” --J. S. Mill

I'm not even going to embarrass myself and claim that what I do on this site is freedom of speech. I've been and asshole. I've been delusional. I've been real. I've been eccentric. I've been [fill in the blank]. And, I've always been...

But what happened with JE SUIS CHARLIE is exactly summed up perfectly by the greats: Metalboy!, Him, Bill Maher, Jon Stewart, Michael Moore, etc...
