Journey Announces Las Vegas Residency

It's the thing to do, after all. Journey will hold a residency at the The Joint inside the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. The residency is set for just nine days, from Wednesday, April 29 to Saturday, May 16.

Tickets start at $59.50 and go on sale January 16. You can buy tickets at the Hard Rock Hotel Box Office, online or by phone at 888-9-AXS-TIX.

"Not the way you want it, that's the way you get it . . ."

Pineda is one of those rare folks in music: humble, appreciative, and entirely aware of the jackpot he landed when Schon came calling. Even he, and I don't think it was an empty gesture, suggests fans want to see Perry and not him. It is amazing how gifted he is as a singer and how grounded he is as a person.

But I think that a down-tuned Journey with Perry would be the last chance this band has to reclaim some props from the more than casual fans. And . . . it . . . won't . . . happen.

So we have to hope that a solo Perry decides to do something live again. Otherwise, Mr. Pucker Lips/O Face is all we got, alongside a band that is lucky to have Pineda on board. And that is sad really. Journey had a real shot at continuing the tradition, albeit in a new direction (with Soto, not Augeri . . . who is another person who understands how Schon treats people). Instead, they decided to become--or were forced to be--Schon's vanity van, with a twist of Cain tinkling along for good measure.

Talent and perspective don't always go hand in hand. Pineda has both. Schon does not.* Hopefully, regretfully, Perry dashes Pineda's dreams and avoid another pact with Schon. He doesn't need it. Neither do we (even if we want it).

On a completely different note: what on earth will they bring to The Joint? KISS, Crue, and GnR all have a theatrical side that, regardless your opinion of any of them, lends itself to residencies such as this. A life-sized Golden Gate Bridge? Schon playing a guitar that shoots lasers? A T-shirt cannon? It doesn't really make sense given what The Joint has produced in the past.

[In other Vegas news: prepare for Hell Gate, where Sharon Osborne trots Ozzy out like Bentham at an annual meeting. The only that could be more hellish? Him singing a duet with Neil while Dave Evans whistles.]

* perspective being a matter of opinion in this case.

What Him said! A lot of talent in the band,(Schon included). Besides being a helluva drummer, Dean Castronovo has a better voice than 98% of the lead singers in other bands. Unfortunately it tends to get buried behind Schons seemingly 120 minute guitar solo. We get it Neal, you can blaze. But there's really no need to do it twice in every song, and between the verses and chorus, and leading into the bridge, etc.

As long as Schon keeps his clothes on this time, wow was that ever a frightening sight?!

This is another trend Motley started. I'm not a huge a Journey fan, but I admit that the new guy has got the chops. I have to be in a really cheese dick mood to listen to these guys, but whatever people like, people like. I'd see these guys but pushin 60 bucks ain't the way to go.

I saw this line up a couple years ago with foreigner and night ranger and even though no original so here in 2 of the bands all the bands were fantastic. Hansen n pinella both step in and do awesome jobs and both sound very close to originals.

I caught the Journey, Steve Miller, Tower of Power triple bill when it came to San Diego last year. Even reviewed the concert for this very site. Anyway, Journey sounded phenomenal although Schon soloed waaaaaaay too much. Pineda is absolutely the goods!

If these guys get a bunch of cheesy lasers to match their cheesy music, it will be a delightful cheesefest, magnitudinally unmatched by any other in recent memory!

I personally don't mind excessive soloing. I'm a frickin' electric guitar freak.

And that kid sure can sing!

Love the fact that Pineda is so humble. Saw them with Foreigner and NR. Neal wants the spotlight way too much. It's all about him him him. Just look at their last DVD Live in Manila, probably more spotlight on him then everyone else. And adding a solo at every vocal break is just ridiculous. We know you can play Neal, doesn't make you less of a conceited jerk.

It's not all about me, Mike! I kid.

Kudos to Gary for mentioning Castronovo. Played with some amazing talent and is a talent as well.

And bkallday, you have that right: a manscaped pile of old man muscles is not what the crowd wants!

[Dj, while Crue started the rock/metal version of the residency, it is a far grander tradition and one that was jump-started this century by the pop crowd at far larger venues on the Strip. I only wish I had been around/old enough to see the Fat Elvis circus back in the day. The videos show he could still bring it, even while trading in self-effacing diversions as that train ran right off the rails.]

In my rant against Schon's 2 hour look at me-fest,I forgot to mention Arnel. That kid does Steve Perry better than Steve Perry can anymore(Perry'd be the first to admit that he can't quite hit some of the ungodly registers he used to routinely venture into). Also, face it. The band itself is tighter than Rosie O'Donnell in a pair of yoga pants, so if I were in Vegas I'd gladly throw down the $75 or whatever to see them.Like MB said,I'm also a guitar freak, and Schon can certainly rip with the best of 'em. It'd just be better if he did it a little less....
