Pineda is one of those rare folks in music: humble, appreciative, and entirely aware of the jackpot he landed when Schon came calling. Even he, and I don't think it was an empty gesture, suggests fans want to see Perry and not him. It is amazing how gifted he is as a singer and how grounded he is as a person.
But I think that a down-tuned Journey with Perry would be the last chance this band has to reclaim some props from the more than casual fans. And . . . it . . . won't . . . happen.
So we have to hope that a solo Perry decides to do something live again. Otherwise, Mr. Pucker Lips/O Face is all we got, alongside a band that is lucky to have Pineda on board. And that is sad really. Journey had a real shot at continuing the tradition, albeit in a new direction (with Soto, not Augeri . . . who is another person who understands how Schon treats people). Instead, they decided to become--or were forced to be--Schon's vanity van, with a twist of Cain tinkling along for good measure.
Talent and perspective don't always go hand in hand. Pineda has both. Schon does not.* Hopefully, regretfully, Perry dashes Pineda's dreams and avoid another pact with Schon. He doesn't need it. Neither do we (even if we want it).
On a completely different note: what on earth will they bring to The Joint? KISS, Crue, and GnR all have a theatrical side that, regardless your opinion of any of them, lends itself to residencies such as this. A life-sized Golden Gate Bridge? Schon playing a guitar that shoots lasers? A T-shirt cannon? It doesn't really make sense given what The Joint has produced in the past.
[In other Vegas news: prepare for Hell Gate, where Sharon Osborne trots Ozzy out like Bentham at an annual meeting. The only that could be more hellish? Him singing a duet with Neil while Dave Evans whistles.]
* perspective being a matter of opinion in this case.
I personally don't mind excessive soloing. I'm a frickin' electric guitar freak.
And that kid sure can sing!
Kudos to Gary for mentioning Castronovo. Played with some amazing talent and is a talent as well.
And bkallday, you have that right: a manscaped pile of old man muscles is not what the crowd wants!
[Dj, while Crue started the rock/metal version of the residency, it is a far grander tradition and one that was jump-started this century by the pop crowd at far larger venues on the Strip. I only wish I had been around/old enough to see the Fat Elvis circus back in the day. The videos show he could still bring it, even while trading in self-effacing diversions as that train ran right off the rails.]
