If I do go, though, not sure I will make it in time for Great White. There are plenty of things to do in Vegas that don't involve Terry Ilous (mind you, perfect for XYZ . . . but a rough fit for Great White).
That'd be great if you make it to the show.
During Great White, you'll find me & "B" either at the bar, or close to a fire exit.
Instead, they can do now what they should have done long ago... finding someone who can at least approach a lot better approximation to the chops and sound of the legendary Russell. Or better yet, just give him one more chance!
But I have reevaluated Extreme over the years. So much of their stuff was so, so, so cheesy (I really never wanted to "get the funk out," thank you very much). Still, songs like "Stop the World" sound--to my older ears--amazingly good now. There is something (please forgive this comparison) Beatle-esque about songs like that, or at least Tears for Fears-ish. They were/are a great set of musicians. And Cherone has an excellent set of pipes. But the VH gig exposed just how niche that voice was (even if people unfairly, myself included, slagged that album too much). I still want to drive a stick through my ear-holes when I hear "Hole Hearted." But I also recognize that as being a better-than-average representation of what a metal ballad should sound like and not a by-the-numbers "When the Children Cry" (a band I love a lot more) sorta' "we gotta' do this" thing.
I trend towards Russell when it comes to Great White, even if his voice is getting increasingly high even as he seems--seems?--to be doing increasingly well with his rotating cast of bandmates. Like I said, Ilous has a great voice . . . for a different band. And I increasingly think that, in spite of all the mental and emotional and financial harm Russell caused to Great White, Kendall has shown himself to be a self-satisfied and sanctimonious reformed addict, one who sold out a person he cared for in order to set himself on a path to who-knows-what. While I initially felt for what he and the band went through, I now see it as more calculated and damaging than that. Again, Russell is no saint. But I think he drew the short end of the straw, in what he did to himself and what he had done to him. I guess there is no double jeopardy when it comes to the gritty reality of small time--and, really, both versions of GW are dealing with that now--rock n' roll.
Skid Row? I need to stop talking about them. I have said enough.
