Jeff Lynne's ELO Releases New Music

ELO has a new song out called "When I Was a Boy." The song is off the upcoming album Alone In The Universe, due November 13. Thoughts?

Ahhh...the 70's. Not bad at all...sounds very much like the ELO of yesteryear.

Agreed, JAT. Agreed.

If this is any indication, it might be better than the middling (though still good) _Zoom_ (2001), his needless (well, musically needless to me) _Mr. Blue Sky_ (2012), and as good as his solo _Long Wave_ (2012). And, to be fair to those poor souls in ELOII, all those albums I mentioned are pretty much solo albums!

Lynne's influence and impact are hard to ignore. You know his Beatles-inspired sound anywhere. He basically re-energized Tom Petty's career, made the Traveling Wilburys listenable (secret revealed: the only Dylan music I can really stomach), and was as much an influence on Oasis's sound as the Fab Four were (even if those lil' pretenders to the throne denied it and talked smack about Lynne and the Beatles because it was cool to adopt a faux sense of dismissal).

Another secret revealed: I still think "Calling American" ranks up there with their best classic songs. Too catchy to resist.

I like it, and I'll buy the song if not the whole album. I read my son an illustrated book of the same name sometimes at night before bed. If you have sons, the book is worth having.
Have a great day.

when it first started playing, I thought it was accidentally linked to "Can't Get It Out Of My Head." It's cool. I'll buy it when it comes out. Yep, Him, Lynne's production abilities are undeniably awesome. Don't forget that he also re-energized Dave Edmunds' career when he produced his "Information" album.

That's right, Bob! Excellent call.

In fact, I saw a show a while ago where they were talking about how much of a departure those two songs were for Edmunds. I can't recall the name of it though.
