Sammy Hagar's 'Rock & Roll Road Trip' Features Tommy Lee

Sammy Hagar's new series Rock & Roll Road Trip will premiere Sunday, January 24 at 9p.m. on AXS TV. The first episode features Tommy Lee. Here's a preview clip of Sammy, Tommy and Michael Anthony jamming on "Rock Candy." The song sounds awesome - makes me wish Tommy would lay down some straight rock n' roll in his solo career going forward.

Also, I'm going to point out how old I am right now and just say that I don't know if the interview is shot in Tommy's kitchen or not, but I truly covet that beautiful Viking refrigerator in the background. #Adulting

Two quick points...First, my stupid cable company doesn't AXS TV, so I won't be able to watch this. second...Allyson, just remember, no matter how old you get, you'll always be way younger than me, and at least a few of the other BBG regulars. :)

I'm pretty sure that's Sammy's kitchen.

Y'know, there's 3/4ths of a really good band there...
Nothing against Sammy as a guitarist, but he's at his best with just a mic in his hand.
Or, he could play rhythm, & they get Greg Leon... the guitarist from Tommy's pre-Motley band, "Suite 19" , who was also the guy playing guitar 35 years ago today, at what was essentially Motley's first rehearsal. Greg on guitar & vocals, Nikki on bass & Tommy on drums. Greg was also the guy chosen to replace Randy Rhoads in Quiet Riot, and was George Lynch's predecessor in Dokken.

Add him to these 3 & you'd REALLY have something!

Age is just a number, Allyson.
I'm pretty sure you're young enough to be result of my high school prom's date night.
60 is the new 25.
Ace, did Suite 19 record anything? Just curious given your latest deep dig for all of us. And why is Greg Leon not better known (at least he doesn't seem that well known). Is there a story there?

And I also concur about age, though I would add that the number is--and always will be--finite.

"He who is of a calm and happy nature will hardly feel the pressure of age, but to him who is of an opposite disposition, youth and age are equally a burden." Plato (427-346 B.C.)

So enjoy life whatever age you find yourself to be.

Him,
Suite 19 recorded some demo's but that's about it. If you spend enough time on the internet, you can find photo's of the Whiskey A Go Go marquee w/ Suite 19 headlining over Sarge & some 3rd on the bill band called "Metallica"... Funny how life works out. Greg's other band "The Greg Leon Invasion" has put out either 3 or 4 CD's on FNA Records & they're really good straight ahead rock. Currently he's the #1 go to amp repair/ mod guy in the L.A. area... and you can also see him in this.... he's interviewed in this movie, and you can see him in the Dokken lineup on the 45 at 19 second in... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XlzWl795u0E

Although I don't necessarily disagree with Ace's point wrt Sammy's guitar playing in general, i do prefer that he plays rhythm. Particulalrly on a band like Chickenfoot, where Satriani would solo like crazy and you need that second guitar to help hold down the fort.

Sammy Hagar... Great in Montrose... One good song solo... "There's Only One Way To Rock" and the undisputed King of AOR in Van Hagar when it all went south after Diamond Dave's departure.

Sounds like Leon has the cred, Ace, but I would do you one better with that line-up... Replace Hagar entirely! But, hey, at least he got a film crew over to Lee's house.

Also, Ace, I saw that Dokken 45 with Leon on it several years ago on Ebay. I think it went for a couple of hundred bucks as it had a nice picture sleeve with, speaking of age, a very young Don Dokken gracing the front.

p.s. Once again, Ace, thanks for another trip in the L.A. Glam Metal Time Machine.

Agreed, Metalboy! Thanks, Ace, for that history lesson. Really appreciate it.

...And even more devastating for me, Dale "Buffin" Griffin, the drummer for Mott the Hoople, also died today... he was 67.

I'm glad you all enjoyed a spin in the Glam Rock Time Machine. I like to do my best to keep some of the important details from being forgotten.

Want one more related one? I was talking to Gary Van Dyke, who was the Dubrow/Quiet Riot bassist after Randy & Rudy took off for Blizzard of Ozz, & was asking him about a song from way back when, & he said, "Man, I wish I had a copy of that song.." I think I gave him a heart attack when I said ... "Uh, I do... I'll make you a YouTube slideshow video, so you can have it"...

So, I'll share it with you guys... Here's the DuBrow band, from their very 1st gig, at the Starwood. "You Hold The Key"... Enjoy!

It's cool to see Tommy doing some rock n roll stuff. I see more of his DJ/techno stuff in his future, but it would be really cool to see him do some rock/metal stuff. Hey hot the talent and mindset to work with any musician I think.

HAGAR RULZ!!! 'Nuff Said!

Ace, we're not worthy! Thanks for "You Hold The Key".

Kari, though I can appreciate your unconditional Metal Love for Hagar, reality is, like I said in my previous comments, "There's Only One Way To Rock" and that's all!

That just plain kicked ass. Tommy is one of the best rock drummers out there. It's a shame he wants to be the worlds oldest teenager with the techno nonsense. And I'm with you Kari,I love Sammy. Anybody that penned the song "Heavy Metal" is ok in my book, although as Ace pointed out,he should leave the heavy lifting on the axe to EVH,Satch,or Vic Johnson like he normally does.

Again, thanks Ace. That was cool to hear!
January 21, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterHim
Gary, forgot about "Heavy Metal"!

Okay, he's got 2 songs... That and "There's Only One Way To Rock", which is the better of the two.
