Hall and Oates Live Review

On Wednesday night, I saw Hall and Oates live at Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati. I went with my husband Eric and most of the folks in the crowd seemed to be couples. The audience definitely trended much older than me. It was hot and there was a really good crowd and people seemed to be in a good  mood.

The show started at 9 and the duo breezed through hit after hit. The entire setlist is below. The backing band was great and I was amazed at the older man named Charles DeChant who played saxophone and flute. First, he looked like Bernie Sanders with really, really long hair. Second, he was wearing a three piece suit and it was 95 degrees, but whatever. He was a great musician and turns out, he's been with Hall and Oates since 1976! The highlight of the show for me was, of course, "She's Gone," my very favorite Hall and Oates tune.

At one point, Eric leaned over and said, "Man they are corny" and I said, "Of course they are!" Both Daryl Hall and John Oates seemed to be having a genuinely good time, occasionally reminiscing about their hits and when they originally wrote them.

I have to say the show was definitely a different concert vibe than what I'm used to. Sure, people danced and sang along, but the crowd wasn't rowdy like at a rock show. There was a hipster couple in front of me and they were having a blast and a half, so that was fun to watch too. I'm glad I went. The show was worth the money. Definitely a bucket list band. You should see them if you like any of the awesome pop tunes below.

I have seen these guys 2x in the last 5 years, and they are a good time. So many hits...

It's funny, there is always conversation about how grunge killed the glam / hard rock scene in the early 90s. If you think about it, the Bon Jovi / Def Leppard scene killed off bands like Hall & Oates, The Cars, J Giles band etc.

Music is cyclacle and the good bands will always survive in the end as long as they have the catalog, and respect their audience enough to make the best of their live show.

"She's Gone" and "Sara Smile"... Absolute classics. Those two songs and pretty much anything off the "Abandon Luncheonette" album are sheer perfection. Anything after that is total cheese.

I haven't decided if I wanna go see The Culture Club, Wham, or Hall & Oates. Tough decision I'd say!!!! One things for sure, with these epic acts...I can only afford to go to one.

I think it's fun to step out of your comfort zone once in a while.

I did this to see Rick Springfield a few years ago and the 14 year old girl deep down inside me loved it. Took me waaaay back.

Would I go again? No. But I'm glad I went.

And these guys do have a lot of great songs. So I'm glad you enjoyed it and had a good time Allyson.

If they're not gonna play "So Close" in their setlist, it's not worth Ginn. I love that song.

Going. Fricking phone.

Daryl Hall is one of the most underrated musicians of our time. Pure talent.

And I know it's July 25, but their Christmas album is an all-timer. By far, my favorite!

Agreed, Rita. Just because you love a musical style, it doesn't mean there is not room for some other styles as well.

I happen to like Erasure and Depeche Mode. I have dabbled in Venom and Celtic Frost. I grew up listening to Charlie Pride. I think Slayer are the bee's knees. But I also happen to think Kick Axe are pretty swell too. I stumbled upon Banks and was blown away. I think Phosphorescent are intriguing. Did I mention Julian Cope or the Hoodoo Gurus?

I will forever identify and return to the music of my youth. I will, more often than not, be Rockin' with Dokken. And I am always willing to 'wait' for White Lion. But a love of one style of music does not a person make. There is a whole lot more out there that pop and crackles . . . if you let it (musically or otherwise).

If you are a diehard who only lives and breathes metal (or glam, or EDM), that's fine. Shout. Shout. Let it all out. Raise your fist and yell. Let your Tennessee Waterfall forever flow down the back of your patch-encrusted jacket. May your acid-washed demins always be snug. Let Doro and Lita whisk you away to a night-scape of silent lucidity. Awake, with eyes wide open, to a world where your creed is the best, and only one. And this is key: never, ever, for any reason, let them take your KISS Army card from you. I call it a cul-de-sac. You call it a calling.

Another great thing about this site (since it is her site): Allyson will always raise a flag in the call to BBG! And others will point us to places where it still exists. But Allyson will also, from time to time, share with us other music that matters. Maybe not to you. And maybe not to me. But that is just fine. The world is a big enough place for all of it. If we let it be that way.

M-E-T-H-O-D . . . you know the words. You know you do (person who will not be named).

That was perfect Him!!! Glad you had fun at the show Allyson, I don't really consider myself a huge Hall and Oats fan, but they have some really great songs.
I can go from listening to Slaughter and Tesla right into Korn and Nine Inch Nails. Anything from Ray Lamontagne to Courteney Barnett to Foreigner or Johnny Cash and Alabama. Can't go wrong with Overkill either...
And yes...I do like to get down on it with Kool And The Gang.

I like all kinds of music, just not "turd" rock like this, Aerosmith, etc.
July 28, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBkallday
Oh, my apologies. Now that I know that "turd" rock is verboten, I will steer clear of it.

But I have never heard of "etc." How would I find their albums? Are they similar in style to ampersand? Maybe umlaut? Then again, I will live and die by the last album that et al. put out. It was a cast of at least three.

So maybe I like turd rock. I certainly like French Stewart and John Lithgow. And Jane Curtin is a national treasure.

HIM, congrats... Your sh*t detector is pretty good... You only mentioned one crap band -- Slayer! That's pretty good, DJ... You only listed three poseur nerd bands who s*ck: TeSLUG, Kornball and Alabamduh!

The rest are excellent, just like Hall & Oates.

AND Viva Overkill!

Listen, I have no problem with those that choose alternate lifestyles. So live your life as you choose!

Okay, BK... That's why you have to face you like mostly either nerd bands or bands that don't ROCK! Based on the bands you have either trashed or defended, just as I have done the same, we get a very clear picture of how much you ROCK and I give you about a 4. Based on what bands I have assessed similarly, I would say my ROCK Meter is on 11.

Bands either ROCK or they're UNROCK, plain and simple. If you can't decifer the difference, you'll never really know.

Examples: Coke is better than Pepsi. Megadeth is better than Metallica. Saxon is better than Iron Maiden. Dom Perignon is better than Veuve Clicquot. Overkill is better than Slayer. Levis are better than Wrangler. Led Zeppelin is better than The Grateful Dead. Cadillac is better than Lincoln, etc., etc. It's really all quite elementary once you do the math.

Overkill is not better than Slayer(Reign In Blood) and Pepsi is absolutely better than coke. As for Megadeth & Metallica...that's definitely debatable. While bashing Tesla for being weak, you can defend Hall & Oates?! Hilarity ensues!!! What is this "Levi & Wrangler" you speak of, btw??? Different strokes for different folks(Watchu talkin bout Willis?) indeed.
July 29, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBkallday
Hahaha!!!, BK! I saw Slayer live at Roseland in NYC off "Reign In Blood". What a comedy act. I almost fell asleep standing up!
