A Friday Thought: This Is All Of Us Here

I totally still have - and use - my big CD binder. It's all organized alphabetical by band, of course. I keep it in a drawer of our big TV stand. The CDs in the binder are the most important to me - and most I've had since I was in high school. I started working at 14 and pretty much spent all my money on CDs back then. Folks can pry my CD collection from my cold, dead hands.

I’m surprised you kept them all, Allyson. I know you are a minimalist, so they must be really important to you. I understand that emotional attachment. I’ve been intending for years to downsize my collection of about 4,000 CDs. I’ve made almost no progress. Each one tells a story of a point in time in my life, both good and bad. That’s the beauty of music. Happy New Year, glam family.

I am a minimalist for sure. I have gotten rid of many CDs - but the ones I've kept pretty much always resided in the CD binder. Those are the most important to me, and from my favorite artists. I have the cases too in a plastic tub - which I waver over. I don't need the cases, but I hate to get rid of them too. It's insane because I don't have any problem weeding out pretty much anything else... except the music.

I feel a lot older right now! I still have my tape storage containers, the one that had the crappy laminate wood look, with three rooms up top, three row on the bottom. In total, I think I still have close to 500 tapes. Funny thing is, on a lot of them only one side plays at normal speed anymore! The other side sounds like a demon is speaking to me, slowly.

Then again, I also have my trusty CD binder(s) and, of course, my LPs.

But, sigh, nowadays I mostly listen to Pandora, Sirius/XM, or the things that I downloaded/ripped to my external hard drive and MP3/4 player (as I still buy the physical CDs . . . because I am odd). Then again, when I am in the mood, listening to one of my older albums is a great treat. Something about the sound, the hiss, the crackle.

Yup. Feel old right now.

i still have a binder like that. but it was never for “real” cds (they stay in their cases on the shelves). instead the binder was for mix-(tape)cds (or later, mp3 compilations) for car travel. now i just load up a flash drive with mp3s for the drive to work - though working 5 blocks from home now, i barely get through a song on my drive these days.

Have 8 cases just like that still full of CD's and DVR's. Also my dad made me a custom bookshelf when I was 14. The top 3rd of the book shelf was designed to hold 300 cassette tapes. My favorite 300 Cassettes are still stored in it and will be until the day I die.

Gave away all my CDs last year to my friend Super Dave. He's about 55 has a typical midwest man garage with minimal insulation, but a wood burning old belly stove. And on the wall is an assortment of random stereo equipment of brands I'm not really sure I've heard of. All leading out to a rolling cart of assorted speakers teathered by long speaker wire. He would find CDs online or somewhere around garage sales and be like "dude... look what I got for $4 ?!?!" I finally said here... save your money. I never use these. I've got all this music burned digitally. It's a slight bummer when I stop by his garage seeing my CDs laying around just like I had them and yes he's got at least 2 big ass binders full. But I know they are in a good home and loved.

Super Dave sounds like a unique, and awesome, fellow.

Just curious, GNR: how do his speakers sound?
