New Tony Iommi Music!

New music Friday! Black Sabbath legend Tony Iommi is back with a new solo single. It is called "Deified." The song is a soundtrack... for his cologne of the same name. Whatever sparks inspiration I guess.

Well, huh. There's that.

Great to hear Iommi playing, an instrumental no less. I am just glad he is of this world still. When you hear him, you know it is him. He has a sound.

The video? Twaddle. Sure, Sergio Momo must have been once again happy to sling some notes alongside the legend, while getting a new scent out in to the universe. Thing is, please watch it to the end. Whatever the message seemed to be is made so perfectly, sadly, clear in those last few second: the majesty of selling a cologne!!! Made me giggle a bit. Then I remembered that art and commerce are like cousins who hate each other, save when the one scratches the other and gets enough others to watch the whole thing transpire . . . while transactions, not magic, result.

The instrumental? For him, some noodling (but I will take it). And one other thing. Just as no one can out Iommi Iommi, you probably should not try to aim for Orff's "Carmina Burana" while hawking skin smells, no less because it also references (accidentally?) Ozzy's old opening sequence before we were told to "let the madness begin."

I am sure that Momo and Xerjoff are really excited about this. I am also happy that Iommi loves making cologne with Momo and Xerjoff. But to call this video "mind-blowing" or to suggest that this song improves upon his last song to accompany a cologne is to stretch, and then stretch again, to the point that you risk losing focus on the one thing that this actually demonstrates: Iommi is still here!!!

Speaking of which, I hope that Ward's gracious response to you, and Ozzy, and Butler, actually results in something. Sad thing is, it won't be experienced by most of us if it is just a one-off concert. But it would be a nice gesture. And, heck, you can offer Ward a pallet of this cologne (a signed 50ml bottle goes for 650.00€, so start checking your couch cushions!) as another acknowledgment of how much you whiffed the reunion thing. And another thing. Rubin is creepy as hell. And he seems to coast on being a couch potato who has no talent other than directing musicians to do this or that. Thing is, he has done some of that and a bit of this too. He helped the Beastie Boys, and Slayer. And he helped your last gasp (absent Ward) at least sound a bit like the old days. Which, by my standards, was a cut above most of the recent days your band/brand had had in decades. Can you smell what the Him is saying?

. . . just saying.

Can’t smell it Him. My summer allergies are brutal.

Rubin is an enigma. Some artists who’ve worked with him love and some abhor Rubin. I am a bystander who can’t say for sure. I did read his book The Creative Act which is chock full of really good stuff and an easy read. The whole “Rubin lays down and closes his eyes and does nothing” reputation is prevalent. Art is a free market. Don’t hire him. You know what you’re gonna get. Or hire him and possibly revolutionize your career. Johnny Cash’s estate is pretty happy he worked with Rubin. As am I. They captured lightning in a bottle a few times. Art is dispensable. Crucially needed for some. But a luxury for the unconscious mind that needs to open.

Iommi perfume stinks. Just like art can. The individual decides if it’s good or bad.

Ah, how I missed this kind of pontificating from the HIMnl!

In the final analysis, I’m happy to get this mixed bag of riffage, no matter how we got here, be it shilling cologne or thimbles.

However, I do agree about the video, which is another absurd mixed bag, making no sense whatsoever. That said, the animation itself is quite well done, artistically and technically.

Nevertheless, I’m just glad to see IOMMI with a guitar in his hand. Maybe, this will lead to him putting out another solo album.

I, too, suffer from allergies, Kixchix. So you had me hacking phlegm while laughing at your comments. Great response!!! Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar.

Shilling thimbles, Metalboy!? Now that is an idea I can get behind. Not the thimbles. But the idea. And it would be a good jam band name too! They could release an album with only one song on it. But, boy oh boy, would that song stumble along!

I think we all agree. Glad Iommi is still here. Glad he can still make music. Now make some music with those who helped you make music matter. Or make music with others who can make your music matter again. Your cologne will sell itself. Or it won't (hint: it will be big with the monied folks in Sicily).

And, again, get us a remix/master (something) of _Born Again_. Your tease posts on YouTube (which I know you aren't actually posting) are click-bait that suggests to others something they actually want from you at this point in your legendary career. Martin? Done. Gillan? Not. Heck, Hughes? Not done either. So you have options . . . in addition to cashing/bowing out with the original guys in The Polka Tulk Blues Band, before they crashed to Earth and became . . . well, you and I know.

Kixchix and Metalboy!, you are the wind beneath my wings. Thanks for responding.

Love,

Him Midler
