Bret Michaels Official Statement Regarding Tony Awards Incident

Just received this and I guess it's legit:

I am trying to remain very positive and somewhat humorous about the whole situation. I apologize that I did not make a statement earlier as I have been feeling pretty beat up over the last few days. The fact is I was honored to be asked to perform at the event. The entire “Rock of Ages” production were awesome and even though I was completely out of my element I was really enjoying myself prior to my injury. In fact all involved at the awards show treated me good.

I had a great time at the Tonys right up until I got blindsided, I must admit it was a little blurry after that. In hindsight, there is no doubt I got my bell rung, unfortunately it has been posted and perhaps funny to watch, but I can assure you it has been painful to experience. In all honesty I had absolutely no idea what struck my head. Upon impact I thought a piece of the lighting rig had fallen out of the ceiling and as I fell back it seemed like my head struck the stage and I blacked out for a second. When I opened my eyes I noticed a large set prop coming down straight for me. I immediately pushed myself out of the way and amidst the chaos I laid on the floor and asked “what the hell just happened?”

My nose, mouth and the back of my head felt numb. I vaguely remember asking Big John, ‘do I have any teeth left in my mouth?’ I knew I could move my arms and legs and that was an instant relief. Somebody handed me a towel to wipe the blood from my face and in my dazed state I recall staring at what seemed to be Shrek, a talking goat head and several monkey like creatures.

Over the last few days a lot of speculation as to what happened and who is to blame have surfaced. I need to make clear at no point since the incident occurred do I feel like the accident was malicious in any way and I feel this will all work itself out. However I must state I found it a little strange that the only statement released by the Tony organization was that I missed my mark and that I was completely fine. First, I thought, ‘what mark?’ as there was no official mark, just a retracting drum riser and an overhead prop being rapidly lowered which was out of my view. Second, I think it was slightly irresponsible for them to report that I was fine without full knowledge of my condition, when a doctor hadn’t even looked at me yet and I surely don’t remember any X-Ray machines backstage. I am not looking for an apology, I only hoped that on a human level that the Tony organizations’ representative would have expressed some concern for injury in their statement or at the very least claim they would be looking into the matter.

Whether it was a miscommunication, missed cue or missed mark no matter what the situation was the prop should have been stopped or at least slowed for a few more seconds until I cleared the stage. I apparently had less than two seconds to avoid being hit. It was evident I was backing up and moving in the direction to exit the stage for at least 30 to 40 feet and it is plain to see I had no clue this prop was descending. For God sake, they have at least a five second delay to prevent the airing of unapproved expletives and nudity!

For the record never at any point during my Sunday morning rehearsal was I ever instructed that the piece was coming down and that I had very little time to get off the stage, otherwise believe me I would have stopped or at least ducked so as not to be knocked out at the Tonys. Trust me I never wanted any of this to happen. I was simply doing as I was told which was to exit the stage as Poison’s song “Nothin’ but a Good Time” came to a close.

I feel for the actors and actresses who put in so much time and hard work on or off Broadway to get to the Tonys. This is their moment and I am sorry that some of it may have gotten overshadowed by my thick rocker cranium being struck by a stage prop. On a high note I hear it was the highest rated Tonys they have had in years. However, I was bummed that I did not get to see any of the acts perform during the Tonys as I have never seen a play on Broadway before, probably would have enjoyed it, and even more bummed that I did not get to attend the after parties, cuz rumor has it Anne Hathaway was going to be there and she is hot.

I would like to personally thank Bobby and C.C., Mark Hogue, Larry Morand and my crew along with Liza Minnelli, Mark Indelicato and Carole Propp for rushing to my dressing room to check on my condition. In closing I truly appreciate everyone’s concern. I thank the Good Lord I have a thick skull and I have a feeling this may have been my first and final curtain call at the Tonys.

Sincerely, Broadway Bret Michaels

Get to Know...The Veer Union

The Veer Union is a great new band I learned about because of my gig with Noisecreep. Yesterday, the band introduced their video for "Seasons." The band's debut album is called Against the Grain.

The Veer Union formed in 2004 and is signed to Universal Motown. They've toured with Hinder and Black Stone Cherry and are currently on the road with Halestorm.

I just can't say enough great things about The Veer Union. This is thinking (wo)man's Metal for sure. Great hooks, powerful choruses and some deep topic matter. I hope you like the band as much as me. Let me know your thoughts.

Bret Michaels (Really) Angered Over Tony Awards Debacle - I Predict Lawsuit!

Ok, so maybe you've been living under a rock and missed the clip of Bret Michaels getting (nearly) beheaded at the 2009 Tony Awards. Sure, it looks bad and bandanna boy (thanks Kenny!) did go down hard. In all seriousness, the incident is scary as shit because those stage props/video screens are massive and weigh literal tons. So anyway, Bret either missed his mark or someone was asleep at the wheel, but whatever the case, Bret was smacked, knocked off his boots and smashed his nose and may even have neck and back injuries. I predicted there were be repercussions...and it seems I was right.

Our friends over at Blabbermouth posted comments from Bret Michaels' management company criticizing the Tony Awards. Here's a little bit:

Janna Elias, a representative for Michaels, stated, "With all due respect to everyone working the Tony Awards, somewhere down the line there was a lack of communication and the prop should have been immediately halted until Michaels was clear. Sunday morning at rehearsals, Bret was never informed that the descending set piece existed, let alone would be moving into position as he was exiting the stage.

Added Elias: "I find it surprising that a Tony spokesperson would brush off this incident with a comment stating, Mr. Michaels missed his mark,' with no mention of concern for his condition. If everyone at the Tonys were aware that Bret missed his mark, then they should have been aware enough to stop the set piece from hitting him or at least slowed it down until he cleared the stage. I feel had this incident happened to Liza Minneli, Dolly Parton or Elton John, the Tonys would have at least issued a letter of concern.

I actually agree with that Elias woman on the part about special treatment for Liza, Dolly or Elton. It does seem weird no one with the Tony Awards issued a statement of concern - but maybe Bret's injuries are really nothing to write home about. Who knows for sure?

Now, in case you're confused or don't follow Broadway (and I don't either, so there you go) Poison was on the Tony Awards as part of a special medley for Rock of Ages. That's a show all about Glam. Now, to make this story even more bonkers, Dee Snider is defending himself, saying he didn't have anything to do with Bret's accident. Did we think he was guilty? I mean, WTF? Apparently, there was a chance Dee and the rest of Twisted Sister were going to perform "We're Not Gonna Take It" during the awards show, but that obviously didn't happen. I guess Dee was spotted in the wings right before Poison took the stage and that's how the Internet rumors began...

Bret is scheduled to make an official statement this week. I think he'd be better off writing a new Poison song - and fast - to capitalize on all this bonkers press. The band *needs* new music and having their name in headlines all week is a great kick in the pants when it comes to music press. If Bret is overtly negative, it's going to make Poison look very bad. I mean, Bret is already widely criticized for his Rock of Love shenanigans...being overly litigious isn't very rock n' roll.

Who wants to start a Bret Michaels lawsuit poll? I say Bret will sue, settle out of court and get an undisclosed amount of cash. This windfall will mean the absolute death of Poison and we'll never get any new music. That's my official prediction. Leave me yours in the "comments" section. Go!

The Week of Adam Lambert

Adam Lambert sure is having a good week. It was just announced (officially) that the Lamb signed with RCA records. The press release is glowing, with record executives using words like “thrilled” over and over.

An excerpt:

To find a talent as exceptional as Adam Lambert is a rare and special event,” says Simon Fuller, Creator and Executive Producer of American Idol and Founder & CEO of 19 Entertainment. “I am thrilled that American Idol was the platform for the world to discover this brilliant young man. He is unique and unforgettable and a certain star of tomorrow.”

Yes!

Of course, those of us that follow Adam’s every move (and yes, I am a Lamb Skank and yes, I sit on Idol Forums into the wee hours of the night just in case there’s anything newsworthy) already knew about the RCA deal.

Diehards also already knew that Adam landed the cover of Rolling Stone, too.

Finally – just a couple hours ago- the totally awesome cover “leaked.” As predicted, Adam talks about his sexuality (and drugs) in the article.

Adam Lambert Wins First Award, I Fear Desmond Child

Last night, Adam Lambert won the “Young Hollywood Artist of the Year” at the 11th annual Young Hollywood Awards in Los Angeles. The show wasn't televised, but some highlights will be on Entertainment Tonight.

I think it's pretty impressive Adam won the big award of the night considering he hasn't even released his first album yet. Hell, the writing process just started. All sorts of writers are working up songs and I do hope Adam stays true to his word and he maintains a high level of input. One of the biggest writers apparently pitching songs is Desmond Child.

This makes me nervous.

Desmond Child wrote dozens of big Glam hits. Name a Bon Jovi song and Desmond probably had a hand in it...Then again, he also wrote all those 90s Aerosmith ballads...you know, the songs that took all the Rocks out of my beloved favorite band. I need some grit and grime with my rock thank you. Rock songs needn't be polished like a diamond. I hope Adam dirties it up if he does, in fact, go the rock route.

There may be more Adam news this week, so be ready. The big news is an Adam Rolling Stone cover, which would be out this Friday. The rumor is that the cover is quite risqué. I hope so - I expect nothing less.
