rolling stones.
my bad, not!
Hear, hear, BK! Whinery Dogs are indeed complete sh*te!
L.A. Guns are great, Mike... BK is right again... Even if Tracii ain't with 'em anymore, and especially now since they brought back Kenny Kweens on bass. This guy is a complete 110% BADA*S consummate showman on stage! The guitarist also completely kills.
These two hired Guns will be jumpin' around as much as Whiteman & Younkins from KIX (if not more), I assure you! I've now seen L.A. Guns 5 times (3 times with Tracii, one of which was in L.A. before they were signed and the last time with him being in 1989 at The Ritz in NYC). I saw 'em at M3 the year The Scorps & Cinderella headlined (2010?) and they completely killed it with Kweens stealin' the show. Lewis is cool, too, complimenting me from the stage on my impromptu backup vocals on "I Wanna Be Your Man".
The last time I saw Guns was on The Monsters of Rock Cruise and they were killer, the guitarist totally swabbing the deck with our faces! No doubt, now with Kweens back in tow, they will put on a helluva show!
Oh, and BK... Dokken is not Dokken without Don's voice. The guitarist is great, though -- a disciple of Lynch. I saw Dio's Disciples on Monster's of Rock... They didn't really do it for me though I really did want to like 'em. Krokus should be amusing as will AOR comedians, EUROPE, who, I predict, will surprise everyone. Queensryche, Vixen, Black n' Blue, Tyketto, Quiet Riot will be solid but not essential for me since I saw 'em all on MORC and/or M3 fairly recently, though I would recommend seeing any or all.
The one sleeper you MUST see, however, is KILLER DWARFS! Saw 'em twice on MORC and they were absolutely killer!
And I agree with DJ! If only M3 would think to get bands like The Darkness for this... THAT would be HUGE! It's actually something I've been saying for years and the same holds true for your other suggestions for newer acts. More new blood is required!
p.s. Ripper... Though we may disagree on TeslUGH!, one thing we can generally agree on is your great quote in your comments here, "...People fight, people die, all things can't remain the same, so enjoy what is left." Where it gets a little iffy is with Warrant for two reasons... Their treatment of Jani Lane and the halfas*ed mediocre singer they have now. But where your observation will really ring true is having to cringe through intros by Tawny Kitaen and Bobby Brown, who look like they were in fights, died and came back, and definitely did not remain the same, something which their plastic surgeons made sure of!
... and don't give me that Joe Leste IS Bang Tango line. Joe is not the singer he used to be by any stretch, you never know if he is going to be sober enough to make it through the set,,, and his revolving door of band mates could never hold a candle to what the original band had going on.
I will be going to see MSG in May, and the opening band is billed as Don Dokken, now that's truth in advertising. Again, without Jeff, George and Mick it's not "Dokken". I saw Dokken in the 2000's with Reb Beach, who is a phenomenal player, but he hasn't got George's tone or attack, and even with 3/4 of the classic lineup, it sounded off to my ears.
These 80's throwback shows are sometimes fun, and were a breath of fresh air throughout the 2000's,, but now that the bands are splintering down to fewer and fewer original members, it's actually becoming more sad IMHO.
All of this being said, if I were on the East Coast I would probably still go, for the party aspect, and to see KIX.
With Riley still on board and the fact they got Kweens back makes it even more kicka*s!
Dokken's not Dokken with Don Dokken without his voice. However, that dude he had on guitar at M3 (notice I'm too lazy to look up names if I don't remember, even if I had beers with Grant on MORC)
is as close as you'll get to Lynch. He's actually a former student of Lynch's, personally trained by him, and does go for that classic Lynch sound, as opposed to more of an approximation you claim Grant is doing for L.A. Guns.
And, Mike, your estimation of Leste and Bang Tango is accurate. Now calling him a shell of what he once was would be an understatement as his voice is completely shot and you can understand why. I had the fortunate experience to see them at Limelight in NYC back in '90 and they were stunning with Slash joining them in stage for 3 songs. Where's Kylie Kyle (or whatever the h*ll his name is).
Leste was nice toward me on MORC, primarily because of that story for which he probably bought me a drink. One just gets the feeling he was too much to deal with for the others in the classic line-up and probably had to go it alone with hack players to simply eek out a halfway decent living.
And you're right about the scene becoming more sad as many of the bands are becoming more and more splintered... But with L.A. Guns being the exception, IMHO.
