'Love Is Your Name'

So Steven Tyler's first country song is out. It's called "Love Is Your Name." It isn't heinous and doesn't sound as "country" as I expected, but still. It isn't great, either. I just don't get it, but whatever. It's Steven's life and career and he can make whatever music he chooses. I guess I can choose to stick to the stuff he makes with Aerosmith and try to forget this country phase.

Contrived, as if even he can't believe he is trying to replace the glossy pop ballads (no offense, Warren) with glossy country ballads (no offense, Lee and Paslay).
How about this? You call some guys named Hamilton, Whitford, or Tyler . . . or even Solomon and Weismantel for heaven's sake!
Looks like John Corabi and Larry "Bud" Melman had a baby.
I really think he could have pulled this off and actually helped country music because of his name recognition instead of continuing Country's decline into formulaic Pop mediocrity.
How, pray tell?
He should have gone country a la The Stones Graham Parsons influenced Country Rock on "Exile On Main Street" or the song "Far Away Eyes" off "Some Girls", one of the greatest examples of a come back album ever, btw!
BK, in total honesty, you're right. Even though "Done With Mirrors" showed promise of a fresh start in 1985, it was a last gasp at best and a halfa*sed one at that.
Larry Bud Corabi is all but lost to us now.
"Tongue in cheek" indeed, Bob. Tyler shoulda done something with the same smartas*sed sarcasm and sense of humour as The Stones displayed on "Far Away Eyes", a song that may never have been fully realized had it not been for the time they spent with Parsons, before his death and way before they cut it.
To me, much of their 70's cannon as well as those first two 80's outings, "Tattoo You" and some of "Emotional Rescue" are rife with deadpan sarcasm and wit (which is why they're such Gods). The music is laden with it as much as the lyrics.
And Aerosmith dabbled in it somewhat with a smattering of songs on "Honkin' On Bobo".
Where both The Glimmer Twins & The Toxic Twins lost it was when counting money became a hobby and each bands music almost simultaneously, The Stones with "Undercover of the Night" and "A Night In The Ruts" respectively, became more disingenuous.
Both never really made it back after that. In the words of my immortal reluctant Rocker father, you can only eat so many steaks in one lifetime, do I don't think this is actually a $$$ grab. This is about his legacy. Thing is, I guess Tyler doesn't get that he already has one. Does he really have to veer to such extremes to avoid making "Rocks II"? Such a shame the old dame has finally lost the plot...
And now, ladies and gentleman, I give you, in the words of HIM, and as I introduced before, the one and only Larry Bud Corabi!
I, too, sat and looked at that picture for a long time, Metalboy! (had nothing else to do while that twaddle played in the background). The mind works in mysterious ways!
Excellent post about Laurel Canyon, Bob. I think you nailed that, and the issue of branding for branding's sake, rather than for either a love for the style or an interest in perhaps tweaking it with a bit of snark-based appreciation.
Off topic, but important: RIP BB King. What a loss.
