'Black Eyes Blue'

Corey Taylor is best known as fronting both Slipknot and Stone Sour. I'm a big Slipknot fan. Today, Taylor announced his first solo album and debuted two tracks off the upcoming release. CMFT will come out in October.

Today, Taylor released "CMFT Must Be Stopped" and also "Black Eyes Blue." I just happened to be in the car when the iHeartRadio World Premiere of "Black Eyes Blue" happened and I was immediately impressed. My first reaction was, "That doesn't sound like Corey Taylor at all..." and then later "'Black Eyes Blue' fits right into our Glam scene!"

Check out both songs below and let me know what you think.

Hmmmm . . . "you know me better than the ones that know me best." Hmmmmm . . . again.

I listened. And it feels like this to me: a 'weak sauce' version of Black Star Riders, right down to the strumming guitars and the plaintive singing. I was going to say "Mike 'the Troubadour' Tramp with a case of writer's block" but I felt that might be too on the nose. And for those in the cheap seats, I know, I know. This isn't an acoustic song. It's got some modern sheen and some electric get-up-and-go. So slag me if you will. But slag me for appropriately off-kilter comments.

To me, it does sound like Taylor, just doing different tones. And perhaps that is my problem. Taylor grates on my nerves more than he swaddles my metal and glam bones. But good on him for trying new things. Me not liking it doesn't matter one iota. I am sure many more will be in Allyson's camp on this one (even if I am in Allyson's camp forever, thanks to her wonderful site).
