News Of The Week Roundup: Week 3, 2021
It was another historic week in America. On Wednesday, Joe Biden was sworn in as President and Kamala Harris, Vice-President. On each Wednesday of the year so far in America, we have had (1) the Capitol Insurrection (2) Donald Trump's second Impeachment and (3) a Presidential inauguration. That is pretty wild in straight historical terms. We do live in interesting times.
On Inauguration Day, a star-studded concert captivated the country during Prime Time. The best part? A massive fireworks display at the very end of the live broadcast. It was the best fireworks show I have ever seen, even edging out a massive show at Disney World during "Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Celebration." Seriously, Disney knows how to do fireworks. The ones in Washington D.C. were so much better.
Still dazzled by the inauguration show? Here’s how it came together, and why Tom Hanks looked so cold. https://t.co/5nMzA869by

January is on track to be the deadliest month of the COVID-19 pandemic in America. Period. While so many continually act as if the pandemic is over, infection and hospital data still show otherwise. The good news is that a 10 day average of nationwide hospitalizations is *finally* showing a decrease of new admissions. Hopefully we will stay on that trend. In the UK, the month is just as deadly regarding the pandemic, despite very strict lockdowns.

Also, it looks like double masking is becoming standard advice among the science community. I've been doing it for awhile now. Just seemed like common sense, especially since the UK variant may be more deadly than the other COVID strains.
What's the best way to wear your mask? 😷

Scientific studies have found a double layer of fabric and surgical masks are the most effective in filtering out particles.

In random and fascinating science news, motorcyclists now have an airbag option of sorts. Check out this story on pants that are basically airbags, making riding a little more safe.
These super-strong jeans have concealed airbags inside the legs to protect motorcyclists. https://t.co/ZvIaEhffEj

And finally, I leave you with this: apparently Def Leppard's Phil Collen lost all his "lockdown weight" and is as lean as humanly possible. Goodness!

The regulars here cover a wide spectrum of beliefs & viewpoints, but that generally doesn't matter because that's not why we're here. Music unifies people, and I don't care who you voted for: if you want to chat about rock or metal, I'm all in and if we were in person, I'd probably buy you a drink.
If I want to get fired up and argue politics, I'll go to Twitter. If I want to talk about Motley, Poison or Aerosmith, I come here. I don't think it's a bad idea to want to try new things and introduce new topics to the blog, but politics - especially in today's climate - is a tough subject. IMO, I'd leave the focus on the music.
Just my 2 cents. Keep up the amazing work, Allyson, and thanks for BBG. I've been coming here for many years, and will continue to do so. :-)
“Lighten up Francis” What movie is that from?
People are multi-faceted and have the right to discuss any topic they choose, irrespective of their day job. I'm a Corporate Banker, yet I believe I have a right to discuss music, politics, Trump, Putin, Kardashians - you name it. I don't need to stick to Finance/Derivatives/Trading, etc. I talk about whatever I choose.
Allyson should do whatever she wants.
I liked this new approach. Keep it.
Obviously this is Allyson's site so she can and will continue to post about whatever the hell she wants. However, imo including political posts is not a good idea and this will be my last comment on the subject. Now tell me how wrong I am and how stupid i am. As Jericho tells, Seb... be my guest!
As for me, you guys let me know what you think after you cash the $1,400 check (or more) from Biden, as well as when he achieves herd immunity with a NATIONAL Covid vaccination plan (something the previous administration was NOT on track to do) so you can go to Crüe / Leppard / Poison / Jett a lot sooner than before possible until now.
p.s. Hear, hear, Rita!🤘😎😘😎🤘
First thought: Iggy Pop has had some work. Second thought: blech. You all know the person who knows they are doing something right, then points that out every time they have a chance, and then stands back and says: "Huh? Well? Yes?" Phil has that spot covered. Meanwhile, Willis has a bridge he would like to sell or rent to you.
So glad to see Rita posting. Been awhile since we chatted. I hope you are doing well.
I am seeing some odd spots and colors on posts by people I traditionally respect on this site. Yikes. Once your 'mong' is readjusted, I hope we can get back to being thankful for a site like this. And if a different point of view leads you to use the word "taters" I think we have an answer to a question we weren't asking.
Bkallday, thank you! You raise some points that point to why I avoid politics on this site. That said, I do think people can learn from other POVs even if they disagree with them. But that requires patience, and respect, and a bit of skepticism/empathy. Personally, I don't mind discussing contrasting views. Then again, I also expect both sides to be ready and willing to give and take when those discussions occur. I hate to quote-bomb, but here it goes (and thanks John S. Mill for being a voice of sanity then and now):
“He who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that. His reasons may be good, and no one may have been able to refute them. But if he is equally unable to refute the reasons on the opposite side, if he does not so much as know what they are, he has no ground for preferring either opinion... Nor is it enough that he should hear the opinions of adversaries from his own teachers, presented as they state them, and accompanied by what they offer as refutations. He must be able to hear them from persons who actually believe them...he must know them in their most plausible and persuasive form.”
Yup. This is Allyson's site. Yup. This isn't a place where you can saying anything and everything (though she is tolerant). But even this stream of posts points to the fact that opinions differ on this site. If that scares you or shocks you or disappoints you, then you can take the 'tater' route and recede. Or you could seek to understand that which gives rise to those reactions. I like finding out more, not less.
Yes, it's been a while, most definitely. That should be remedied.
