Well, it should be a slam dunk for AC/DC going up against those other yawn-tastic nominees, but the Grammys don't exactly have a track record of getting these things right.

More interesting is the "Best Metal Performance" with some serious contenders:

Deftones / Gojira / Mastodon / Rob Zombie.
(Dream Theater is the other nominee here)

Question @Mike Has ac/dc ever won a Grammy???

Also, who's your pick for "best metal performance"?

full disclosure I've never heard a Gojira or mastodon song

I love Deftones and Rob and Dream! can you point me in the direction to check out the others?

Hi Crued,

AC/DC and Metallica were nominated for the first ever "metal" Grammy, and famously lost to JETHRO TULL... AC/DC did win one in 2010 when they put out Black Ice.

Mastodon.. where to begin? They have a lot of material and have evolved quite a bit in 20 years. They also have 3 lead vocals so the band can sound quite different one song to the next.
Some of the more accessible songs would be:
- Curl Off The Burl
- The Motherload
- Show Yourself

Also check out
- Blood and Thunder (featuring Niel Fallon of CLUTCH)
- Divinations
- Colony of Birchmen (Featuring Josh Homme of QOTSA)

My Album pick for Mastodon would be "Crack The Skye"

GOJIRA are one of those acts like Van Halen or Pantera where the core of the group are brothers. They had much more of a Death Metal vibe on earlier albums, and have also grown to become a little more accessible over the last few releases.

Their most recent one, Amazonia, has a Sepultura "Roots" influence to it, and the previous album "Magma" touched on some groove metal.

Here is a decent introduction to Gojira... cued up to the song "Stranded" from the Magma album:

Enjoy!

Some good insights, Mike. Appreciate you bring your love for music to the table. And, Jeff, Mammoth WVH sound good, on record and live. I just wish I liked them more.

For me, though, all these awards shows are damp wads of nothing. Should AC/DC win? Who knows? Mastodon have some great songs and some members have some screwy ideas. What does that have to do with awards? Nothing. Heck, I wish "Godzilla" from BoC would win over Gojira. But now I am just engaging in wordplay!

Thing is, these awards shows draw less and less viewers. So my hope is that they eventually fade out completely. I'd rather discuss a Top Ten list on this site, with people who care about the music, than sit in my living room (kids, that is what you did before people sat on their beds with their noses glued to germ-covered, smudge-covered, slabs of plastic/metal/glass), non-eagerly awaiting the next inductee/winner/best picture/in memoriam.

One final comment: I will take most everything that Jethro Tull has produced over any song on _:Lulu_ (as well as some of the more recent 'Tallica albums). But that is setting the bar pretty low. How low? Once you come in, you have to go downstairs for a drink!

Hope everyone is having a good holiday week!

Him, showing off world traveler skills with the Gojira/Godzilla puns.

I do not know what genre I would place the Black Pumas in, but I'm pretty sure rock ain't it. Throw them out, and you've got four bands/artists *everybody* has heard of. Safe, corporate picks for safe, corporate advertisers. Haven't heard any of those releases, and I'm not really interested in those. There has to be better music than that. Dirty Honey released a record this year, right? Hell, give it to this guy. Bach is way more metal than any of that.

Gogmagog, thanks for the nod. I think I owned a pair of Black Pumas back in the late-80s!

Glad to see Dirty Honey getting a shout out as well, no less that they are touring with Mammoth next year (and did so with Joyous Wolf this year). Exposure. Exposure. Exposure.

There are certainly far better albums that have been released, by newer and older bands, this year. Hell, I'd even say that Dirkschneider and The Old Gang's _Arising_ is better than some of this stuff. Not sure if EPs count though. And I don't care. As I mentioned, these 'shows' need to go the way of the dodo bird!

Speaking of birds, enjoy your Thanksgiving everyone.
