Steel Panther Announce 2022 Tour

Steel Panther has announced the Res-Erections tour. The run goes through March and that makes sense why the poster is all green. Any Given Sin will provide support. Their video for "The Way I Say Goodbye." I like the band, but folks must realize they don't sound like Steel Panther. Together, I think this makes a nice rock package.

I don't know. I just don't get this group. I know many of you will probably disagree with me, but I just see them as a parody. Not a real band. Granted, maybe a parody group that can actually play their instruments. I mean Weird Al is a maestro on the accordion but I have no desire to see his "act" live either.

Weird Al took other people's songs and changed the lyrics to be funny. Steel Panther actually creates original songs. Not to mention they do spot on covers of other bands. And they actually have an engaging show with the crowd.

They are no means Beethoven or the Beatles, but they don't claim to be either. I can see the thought that glam music is somehow being mocked or parodied by these guys, but in essence they are carrying on the spirit. Little more flair, mysoginistic, or over the top. But this really is not that far off from Cherry Pie, Unskinny Bop, etc...

GNR: exactly. "I got a 5150 on a chubby David Lee Roth".

I get both Eddie's and GNR's points. And I think you are both right. They are a skilled parody band that mocks (in a loving way) the music that we love. But you take them or leave them, as they arouse some strong opinions in the metal community. And that's all cool. Personally, I think that some of those who slag on them are a bit sensitive about the fact that their original music is so very, very close the originals we all love (not you Eddie, just saying).

But . . .

. . . as a fan, they really have to up their game. Their act is getting tired. Their albums are getting repetitive. They have had a great run. They are great in concert (but, again, getting a bit repetitive). And they have the talent to return to some of their earlier 'knuckle-draggingly' hilarious spoofs on well-worn metal tropes. They also have that ability to release songs that go just a bit beyond that, such as "The Burden of Being Wonderful," which was both a roast and a reminder. rendered with aplomb.

Losing the bass player? Who cares, so long as the on-stage antics are still good (it is easy, or so I think, to swap out vanity and a hair-dryer for some other joke) and the records are a return to form.

And I think Weird Al is his own thing. I have friends who love him and have seen him live. Me? I think he has some very good covers, ones that mock while making you laugh. But I think it is a totally different case. Sorta' like comparing Gallagher to Manowar. Only one of them is in on the joke!

Edit: not really covers. Spoofs, or parodies, works better.

Have a good weekend everyone!

I was forced to see Steel Panther three or four times (as in I caught a ride to M3 a number of years when they were on the bill and opened for somebody I saw but now forget who it was).

Talented musicians … And I appreciate their attempt at parody.

Their biggest problem besides the lead singer’s excessive plastic surgery? (I mean, this guy looks like a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade balloon of himself, talk about parody)

Where was I? … Oh, yeah … Their biggest problem …

They’re not funny.
